This year’s show is especially meaningful to us, as it has been heavily inspired by youth. Earlier this year, we had the honour of participating in a school tour along the Wolastoqey River, where we connected with so many inspiring young people. Those experiences encouraged us to create a show centered around collaboration with youth and empowering the next generation to take part in the arts.

Tonight!

Head on over to Officers' Square for a night of folk blues with Chris & Lavinia Colepaugh lighting up the stage with rock music at 7pm, August 27.

Vocalist and cellist Lavinia Colepaugh is quickly turning heads with a voice that defies easy comparison. Her striking vibrato has a storybook purity—think Snow White—but charged with the soulful grit of Amy Winehouse. Balancing youthful edge with classical poise, she delivers performances that are as daring as they are disarming.

Sharing the stage is her father, Chris Colepaugh, an award-winning veteran of the East Coast music scene. With more than a dozen albums, international tours, and performances, Chris brings decades of grit, groove, and guitar firepower. His soulful vocals and commanding stage presence have earned him East Coast Music Awards and the reputation of being one of the region’s most electrifying performers. Together, Lavinia and Chris ignite a dialogue between generations: cello meets guitar, raw discovery meets road-tested artistry. Their collaboration is a rare blend of heritage and innovation—deeply rooted in East Coast tradition yet unafraid to push into uncharted territory

INTRODUCING… Dee Hernandez

We’re so excited to welcome Dee Hernandez to this year’s Cape Breton Jazz Festival.

A Cuban-Canadian Afro-Cuban jazz vocalist, singer, songwriter and performer, Dee brings together the rhythms of her Cuban heritage with jazz, soul, R&B and modern fusion to create a sound that is entirely her own.

Born and raised in rural Havana, Dee’s journey to Canada began at just 16 years old, when she defected during an East Coast tour. Since then, she has built a remarkable musical life in Atlantic Canada, becoming known for her powerful voice, infectious rhythms, heartfelt storytelling and electrifying live performances.

A multiple-year East Coast Music Awards nominee, Dee has also received recognition through the Music New Brunswick Awards for her work across Global/World Music, R&B/Soul and jazz-influenced music. Her music has reached audiences well beyond the stage, with songs featured in film and television.

Her connection to jazz tradition is also at the heart of her recent Ella Fitzgerald Tribute project, where she brings her own Afro-Cuban and soul-infused approach to the music of one of jazz’s greatest voices.

And there’s even more to come. Dee will release her debut LP this September, a deeply personal project reflecting her journey from Cuba to Canada and the evolution of her sound.

Come experience Dee Hernandez and the incredible lineup of musicians joining us for this year’s Cape Breton Jazz Festival.
The festival runs Wednesday, September 30 to Sunday, October 4 at The Red Farm, with five nights of world class jazz.

The music doesn't stop at the festival! Join us at Second Encore Pub Wednesday - Saturday for the official After Hours Jazz Jam, starting at 10 PM. Bring your instrument, bring your friends, or just come listen.
