NB Power’s new net metering proposal is a straight-up money grab.
They want to slap net-metered solar customers with a $13 per kW monthly demand charge based on your highest 15-minute grid draw. For a typical morning with a shower, electric heat, cooking, and an EV charger, that easily hits 20+ kW — which works out to roughly $300 a month. That’s more than many of us paid in total before we even installed solar.
They claim it’s about “sharing the cost,” but this charge only hits solar owners. Everyone else keeps their old rate structure. That’s not fair cost-sharing — it’s targeting renewable energy and EV drivers.
Solar NB is fighting this through the EUB process. Systems approved by October this year get 10 years of no change. After that, you’d be forced onto this new, expensive program.
The only real way to avoid the demand charge is to add batteries and take your system off the net metering program entirely. That’s exactly what a lot of us are now forced to do — just to protect the investment we made in clean energy.
This sends exactly the wrong signal for a low-carbon economy. It punishes people who installed solar and drive electric. This isn’t how you build a cleaner energy future.
