We’re usually pretty quiet online(even though it is our business), squirrelled away in the office getting stuff done. We were so happy to get out and shoot some videos for this AMAZING group today. Thanks for having us!

A busy day here at the ALF office with cameras and tutors and babies and volunteers, all here filming our new promotional videos! Can't wait to show you all the results in the year!

There are a lot of new faces and followers, so we thought we'd reintroduce ourselves and the company.

Welcome to Media Odyssey!

We are Kayla and Andrew, the founders and owners of Media Odyssey, a video production and social media company that we have been running remotely since the end of 2016.

Andrew handles the finances and strategic work; while Kayla is the dreamer and creative soul of the company. Together we make a pretty decent team 😉.

Over the last 5+ years we have:

💻Edited everything from viral social media videos, segments for television programs, online classes, and even produced and shot a documentary

📝Helped small business owners make a plan for their social presence

👩‍💻Managed social media accounts for artists, social influencers, real estate agents, and more

🤩Given clients the confidence to show up for their business online in an authentic way

Whatever brought you here, we’re glad to have you! Let us know if you have any questions.

We’re so tired of social media coaches saying that in order to grow and be seen you need to post several times a day including multiple stories and reels!
Not only will a social media strategy like that leave you burnt out and hating social media all together, but it also enforces the fact that quantity is better than quality and that is NOT THE CASE. The truth is, a good caption, an interesting photo, or something that connects you to your clients and audience is going to do more for your growth than something you slapped together because a coach told you you need to post a lot. Every time you create a piece of content, your audience should be at the top of your mind.
Before you post, ask yourself:
Will this content help someone overcome a problem they are facing?
Will this content make someone laugh or brighten their day?
Does this content inform my clients about me, my business, or my values?
Will this content create discussion or make someone think?
If you can’t answer “yes” to any of these questions, you may want to rethink your strategy.

On Fridays we support local businesses!
Fridays are the day when we take a break from working at home and take a trip downtown. We grab a drink and a cronut at and usually we take it home. Today we crossed the street and visited in her studio. We’re working on some website edits for her (as well as a bunch of product photography) while she works on a mural for us! We’re so excited to have some fresh local art to fill our space.
Who is your favourite local business to support? How are you buying local this week?

Today is , where we recognize the harm that residential schools inflicted on Indigenous communities, and to honour those who continue to live with this trauma, as well as remember those who didn't make it. 🧡

SEO 101
We’ve recently had small businesses and entrepreneurs ask us “What is SEO and how do I get better at it?” We thought it might be helpful to bring some key information together to help paint a more full picture.

First off, SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” This is the practice used to increase the quality and quantity of traffic to a website through organic search engine results. In other words, SEO helps show your site earlier in a Google search when people use related search-terms.

You need to consider many elements that tell search engines, like Google, why your site should show at the top of a related search. Here are a few quick thoughts on how improve your SEO:

1. Is your site linked or referenced on other sites? This helps make your site and content “trusted”. Might help to make partnerships or cross-promote where appropriate. It doesn’t hurt to also reference/link your own site pages on your own website.

2. One of the important aspects is to understand how to get the “quality” traffic – and that starts with presenting content on your site that goes hand-in-hand with the search queries you want to attract.

3. Keep your site up to date to drive “returning” traffic, which will increase more “new” traffic. This may seem like a chicken & egg situation, but if you don’t update your website, returning clients/friends will have no reason to return and boost your traffic score – which plays into SEO.

4. Understand the role of your website when it comes to your socials and push followers and clients to your website as social metrics can help your score.

Side note: Just a little something to also consider - Have you tried opening a site on a phone and it looks all wrong? Probably due to a lack of mobile optimization for that site. Try opening yours on your phone. Do you like the experience? Flow? Content size? Consider looking into improving your mobile experience.

If you have any questions around SEO or need help with your own SEO, feel free to message us – always happy to help!

Happy World Theatre Day!
Did you know that we met in Theatre class? The name Media Odyssey actually comes from one of the shows we did during our time at University. Andrew played Odysseus and Kayla played Athena in an adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey". We still do theatre now and then but as our company has grown we've actually been able to work with local theatre companies as clients. We see them grow, teach, and inspire artists in our community and could not be happier to help them along the way. In these difficult times, we wish them all the best and we look forward to continuing to support them and take in shows when this is all over.

We've started a new health initiative for 2020 and one of the things we plan on keeping in check is our personal social media usage.

Andrew has decided to take a daily social media detox where he doesn't touch it, while Kayla has decided to use it in a more meaningful way.

What does this mean for you and your business?
Folks are starting to take a bigger interest in mental health in relation to social media usage, which means although we're spending a large amount of time online we realize it takes a toll on our minds. Don't guilt your audience for taking their health into account and taking breaks.

Instead, try thanking them for being a part of your community.
Communicate with them on a human to human level.
Don't be afraid to slide into those DMs (respectfully of course) and show them that they are an important part of what you do.
Make sure that when you are sharing content it is content that provides your community with value.
Also, don't be afraid to let your business take a mental health day. Especially with small businesses, the thing that makes your business unique is that it's YOURS and YOU are a real person who should also care about their health.

Overall don't be afraid of the changes people are making in their social media use. Treat your community with respect and provide value so that when they are checked into your content they are getting something positive out of it. Don't forget to say thank you so that it can be a mutually beneficial relationship.

What are some changes you're making in 2020 in relation to mental health?

We are small business owners. Our clients are small business owners.

As the Federal Election draws near, we wanted to provide some insight on a topic that isn't often discussed - which is the Federal governement's role in supporting and assisting small business in Canada.

We've listed some key points around small businesses from the six parties who are debating this week - based on their own platforms.

We welcome any feedback on any key points missed or in need of correction.

Note: Each parties' "Small Business Platform" (or equivalent) is listed in the comments.
Note: The placement of the parties in the image is based on the current seats in the House - no bias in the placement.
