Today, French Immersion Biology students from Fredericton High School and Leo Hayes High School had the opportunity to join researchers at the Acadia Research Forest.

Students were guided through a wide variety of forest stands that are part of a commercial thinning intensity trial, giving them a unique, hands-on look into forestry research. Along the way, they got their feet wet, explored real research sites, and hopefully learned a thing or two about forest management, field work, and the science behind New Brunswick’s forests.

Thank you to Philip-Edouard, Emily, and Rosanna from the Canadian Forest Service - Natural Resources Canada for hosting the tour and sharing your passion and expertise with the students. Thanks again to the New Brunswick Centres Of Excellence for their support through our forestry-themed week of experiences!

Yesterday, a number of Forestry 110 students from Sussex Regional High had the opportunity to get outside to learn about a variety of sylvicultural practices in a mix of stands, trying their hand at measuring density, aging with increment bores, practicing tree identification, and much more. Students visited a pre-commercial thinning operation, a stand planted around 30 years ago, and selective harvest stand where they learned what products each type of tree would be transformed into, and where they'd be headed across the province.

A sincere thank you to Chris and the team at the Southern New Brunswick Forest Products Marketing Board for facilitating the tour and giving the students great hands-on learning opportunities and to the New Brunswick Centres Of Excellence for their continued partnership through our week of forestry events across the province!

Forest NB had the pleasure of hosting Secretary of State Wayne Long and Minister Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, député / MLA today at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex for a joint announcement of federal funding for tariff-impacted workers. This partnership will provide $13.8 million over three years, invested through the new Canada–New Brunswick Workforce Tariff Response to support workers in the softwood lumber, mining, construction and transportation sectors, as well as other directly and indirectly tariff-affected industries. This new funding will help over 1,500 workers in New Brunswick build new skills and seize emerging opportunities.

“Forest NB welcomes this agreement as an important step toward supporting workers and businesses affected by ongoing tariff uncertainty,” said Kim Allen, the organization’s executive director. “New Brunswick’s forest sector is highly exposed to global trade pressures, and the impacts are felt not only by companies, but by workers, families and communities across the province. By investing in upskilling and retraining in direct collaboration with employers, government is helping to protect jobs today while strengthening the skilled workforce our sector needs now and into the future.”
