You homeschool? Aren’t you worried about socialization? "We live in a society where pizza gets to your house before the police! Please don't concern yourself with my kids' socialization."
YIKES!
The single most troublesome feedback ALL homeschoolers get from the public is the question and criticism of socialization.
What's your favorite reply or comeback?
Or what's your favorite bit of homeschool socialization humor?
I hope you enjoy this humorous post series about the issue of socialization.
But all humor aside, here is some much more scientific food for thought, as well.
1. If socialization were a problem, would colleges and universities be developing recruitment strategies to attract homeschoolers?
2. If socialization were a problem, would 87% of peer-reviewed studies on social, emotional, and psychological development show homeschool students perform statistically significantly better than those in conventional schools (Ray, 2017).
3. If socialization were a problem, would research facts on homeschooling show that the home-educated are doing well, typically above average, on measures of social, emotional, and psychological development, based on research measures, including peer interaction, self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem?
4. If socialization were a problem, would homeschool students be regularly engaged in social and educational activities outside their homes and with people other than their nuclear-family members, such as field trips, scouting, guiding, 4-H, political drives, church ministry, sports teams, arts programs, and community volunteer work?
5. If socialization were a problem, would adults who were home educated be more politically tolerant than the public schooled?
