5 Steps for Optimizing AfCFTA
The African Continental Free Trade Area ( ) holds vast potential, but experts emphasize that actions speak louder than words. Here are 5 crucial strategies African nations must embrace to truly harness the power of AfCFTA:
1οΈβ£ Private Sector Power: AfCFTA's success hinges on the private sector, not just governments. With over 80% of production and two-thirds of investment coming from the private sector, it's key to drive AfCFTA's full potential and navigate global disruptions effectively.
2οΈβ£ Inclusive Growth: Empowering women and youth startups is essential. The real wealth of Africa lies in millions of micro, small, and medium enterprises, particularly those run by women and youth. Integrating them into value chains enhances innovation, boosts quality, and propels global competitiveness.
3οΈβ£ Ground-Up Approach: Shift perspectives and adopt a 'From the Streets to the Podium' approach. Commendably, the Private Sector Federation (PSF) is leading the charge. AfCFTA's implementation rests on private-sector collaboration, making this approach the key to success.
4οΈβ£ Fostering Growth: To transform AfCFTA into the engine of African wealth, we must aim for over 7% growth (double the projected 4%). Investment, policies, standards, and infrastructure must be harmonized. Africa's growth prospects are strong, with Eastern Africa leading the charge.
5οΈβ£ Trade and Investment Hunt: Embrace opportunities within the continent. Africa imports $300 billion of goods externally, including $50 billion in food. The chance to reverse this lies in agricultural commercial farming, value addition, agro-processing, and cross-border investments.
It's time for Africa to seize the reins and transform AfCFTA into a catalyst for prosperity. By uniting private sectors, empowering women and youth, adopting a ground-up approach, fostering growth, and exploring internal opportunities, the continent can reshape its economic destiny. The journey may be gradual, but the shared success will be worth the effort.
