đ Bug of the Month: Box Elder Bugs
Have you noticed clusters of black and red bugs hanging out on sunny walls or around your windows? Those are box elder bugs, a very common, seasonal pest in our area.
What are they?
Box elder bugs are outdoor insects that feed on box elder trees (also known as Manitoba Maple trees). Theyâre especially noticeable in early spring and fall when they gather in large numbers.
Why are they in and on the outside of my house?
They're not trying to move in permanently and they don't breed or feed in our homes. They are initially attracted to the warmth on the sunny sides of our homes in the fall. They then sneak into the small gaps and cracks, under siding etc, to escape the cold or sudden weather swings. Inside you will usually find them around your windows as they are attracted to the light and are trying to get back outside.
Are they dangerous?
No, they donât bite, sting, or cause structural damage. Theyâre more of a nuisance than a threat.
If youâre having a problem with box elder bugs we can help.
