It’s good to get outside. Halton Region offers breathtaking natural beauty, providing opportunities for an active lifestyle.
Unfortunately, personal injuries may occur anywhere regardless of age. Whether walking on a woodland trail or just climbing down the steps in your home, accidents happen. The impact on seniors though can be significant.
Intergenerational challenges may arise in communications after an accident. Reluctance of an older person to admit when they are hurt and need help can come from not wanting to seem a burden on their relatives. It can also be in their negative response to healthcare professionals trying to do their job. Alternatively, adult children acting out of an overabundance of caution may start to impose changes they feel need to be made though it may be perceived as ageism to their senior parent.
Often this is out of a fear of what could happen next. The situation may lead to an alteration in the senior’s life and cherished independence: sometimes only temporarily having to attend daily medical appointments; or more substantially leading to a change in their whole living arrangement. It can also mean the need for more involvement by the younger generation in the daily well being of their older parent.
What needs to happen though is to have an open discussion.
