A Zoom Screen-Sharing Bug Let Anyone Take Over Other Devices On a Call

As AI models gain advanced capabilities to find vulnerabilities in software, develop ways to exploit them, and even carry out autonomous hacking sprees, researchers offered a sobering new example on Tuesday, disclosing vulnerabilities in the video conferencing platform Zoom that could have been exploited to take over targets' devices. Anyone on a call that involved screen sharing, whether participants or the host, would have been vulnerable to a silent attack that could be carried out with no indication and no interaction from the victim.

Researchers from the digital defence firm A Security say the bug was discovered in early June using publicly available AI models, and that it took fewer than 20 prompts to uncover the vulnerabilities and create a working attack. Zoom issued a security advisory on Tuesday, including details about fixes the company has already begun rolling out to address the flaws, which affected devices running all operating systems that Zoom supports -- Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

The vulnerabilities were specifically in the protocol used to facilitate real-time annotation during screen sharing. The researchers say their AI bug-hunting systems delved into this component because, like human bug hunters, they have been trained that convoluted and obscure functions often contain overlooked vulnerabilities. This is particularly true with proprietary, closed-source software. An established company like Zoom presumably does extensive code review and vetting on all components and functions, but without the benefit of public, open review, esoteric yet complex features like annotation are more likely to contain mistakes. The bugs are now patched, with Zoom issuing both server and client-side fixes—or patches for both Zoom's own servers and the applications that run on customer devices. But the researchers emphasize that it was alarming to contemplate bugs that could have been exploited to take over a target device simply by getting someone onto a Zoom call.

"What is interesting for us and what we believe is dangerous is the democratization of these capabilities -- the barrier to entry is dropping rapidly," A Security cofounder Omer Gull told WIRED ahead of the disclosure. "Before it would have taken a team of five people maybe six months with a lot of refining and iteration to find this. Now people can reach the same results with under 20 prompts. And Zoom is an important type of target because people assume trust when using it. They don't see it as a threat."

Apple Fixes Screen Sharing Vulnerability in Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma

Apple has released macOS updates 26.6.1, 15.7.9, and 14.8.9 to fix a Screen Sharing vulnerability that could let an attacker “on the network” connect without valid credentials. Update soon.

There’s no indication that this bug has been exploited in the wild. In fact, Apple’s wording suggests to me that Screen Sharing is vulnerable to unauthenticated connections over the local network, not the Internet. Plus, Screen Sharing is turned off by default, so it seems likely that only Macs with it explicitly enabled would be vulnerable. You can check your status in System Settings > General > Sharing > Screen Sharing.

Regardless, the possibility of an unauthenticated user being able to observe or control another Mac via Screen Sharing is sufficiently concerning that I recommend everyone update as soon as is convenient.

14-inch MacBook Pro (M5, 16 GB / 1 TB): 1 day
14-inch MacBook Pro (M5, 24 GB / 1 TB): 8–15 days
14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max, 128 GB / 2 TB): 50–57 days
16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro, 24 GB / 1 TB): 1 day
24-inch iMac (M4, 16 GB / 256 GB): 2 days
Mac mini (M4, 16 GB / 256 GB): 22–30 days
Mac Studio (M4 Max, 64 GB / 512 GB): 56–70 days

Other locations and configurations may vary, and the situation changes daily. In the last week, the MacBook Neo delivery estimate dropped from 10–14 days to 2 days, so the news isn’t all bad.

I don’t think MacBook Neo’s ceiling is dominating the K-12 market. As Apple keeps pushing more performance into this line while holding the line on affordability relative to the market, I think it becomes the default laptop recommendation for a much bigger chunk of knowledge workers, not just students. Most people don’t need a MacBook Pro (or even the power of the M5 Air). They need something reliable, fast enough for everyday work, easy for IT to manage at scale, and priced so a company or a school district can buy it in bulk. The Neo will quickly become as powerful as early-generation Apple Silicon computers, and that should cover most people’s needs unless they are doing local AI workloads.

Apple has released what could be the final bug fix releases of the OS 26 operating systems, primarily to deliver fixes for a massive number of security vulnerabilities, none of which are being exploited in the wild. macOS 26.6 Tahoe, iOS 26.6, and iPadOS 26.6 also optimize the Spotlight index to prepare for their upcoming version 27 releases. For watchOS 26.6 and visionOS 26.6, the release notes merely promise bug fixes and security updates; Apple hasn’t issued the tvOS 26.6 release notes yet.

Third-Party Gadgets Bring Find My Tracking
to Wallets, Chargers, and More

Thanks to the AirTag (see “Apple’s AirTag Promises to Help You Find Your Keys,” 20 April 2021), those of us who tend to leave our car keys in random locations no longer have to ransack the house to find them. Now their whereabouts are instantly revealed courtesy of an AirTag on a keychain. You can even see the AirTag on a map, if you leave it at the park or in a taxi, thanks to the Find My network that leverages more than a billion in-use Apple devices to relay an AirTag’s location wherever in the world it might be.

But where’s the Find My luggage lock? The Find My-enabled charger? A Find My keychain in a different form factor?

These gadgets are available from third-party manufacturers. This is another familiar pattern. Apple unveils new technologies, such as MagSafe, and releases a variety of accessories to build excitement. But over time, it withdraws from the field, leaving it to third-party makers to hoist their own banners.

So it has been with Find My devices.
