For the past week I have been seeing posts of crappy maps showing Canada’s Boreal Biome, even worse I have been seeing AI generated maps of Canada’s Boreal forests which really ticks me off!
This map gives you a sense of how large and remote Canada’s Boreal Biome is and an even better sense of just how big the Global Boreal Biome is.
The Global Boreal Biome (or Taiga) is the world's largest land biome, forming a circumpolar ring across the Northern Hemisphere in North America and Eurasia. Encompassing nearly one-third of the Earth's forested area, this vast coniferous forest spans Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia. The Canadian Boreal Biome is about 552 million hectares in size and 70% of Aboriginal communities in Canada are in the Boreal Forest.
This map also shows all 901 active wildfires in Canada, of that 786 are in the Boreal Forest, about 87%. When you add in the roads you can see that most of Canada’s population is located somewhere between the southern boundary of the Boreal Biome and the United States border! This visual should give you a good understanding of how difficult it is to fight all of these wildfires in such a vast and remote place.
