It may only be September, but this is actually a good time to start thinking about tax season.

Why?

Because once December 31st passes, some of the decisions that could affect your 2026 taxes are already behind you.

And tax planning isn’t just for businesses.

This includes people that file personal tax return or a self-employed business. The next few months are a good opportunity to start looking at where you stand.

For individuals, that might mean thinking about:

• Changes in your income during the year
• RRSP contributions and retirement planning
• Medical expenses, charitable donations, or other deductions and credits
• Investment income or capital gains
• Tax instalments
• Major changes such as starting a new job, retiring, buying a home, or becoming self-employed
• Making sure you’re keeping the documents you’ll need at tax time

For business owners and self-employed individuals, it can also mean looking at:

• How your income is tracking for the year
• Whether your bookkeeping is actually up to date
• Upcoming business purchases or expenses
• HST/GST obligations
• Instalments and amounts you may need to set aside
• Missing receipts or documentation
• Questions you’ve been meaning to ask before year-end

Tax planning means understanding where you stand early enough that you still have time to make informed decisions.

March is a great time to file a tax return.

September is a much better time to start thinking about it.

If you’d like to get a head start on your 2026 taxes, now is a good time to start the conversation.

I am currently accepting a limited number of new bookkeeping and tax clients in the horse industry.

Equine businesses often have unique bookkeeping needs, including boarding income, training and lesson fees, feed and veterinary costs, equipment purchases, property expenses, and situations where business and personal use may overlap.

My goal is to help owners keep their records organized, understand their numbers, and feel better prepared for tax time.

I work with small businesses using QuickBooks Online and can also help with bookkeeping cleanups, HST, and year-end preparation.

If you own an equine business, or know someone who does, feel free to send me a message or share this post.

Bookkeeping for Seasonal and Rural Businesses

Seasonal businesses have unique bookkeeping challenges.

Income may come in waves. Expenses may hit before the busy season begins. Payroll can change. Cash flow can feel tight during certain months.

That is why organized bookkeeping matters.

Azure Tide Bookkeeping works with small business owners who need practical support with bookkeeping, QuickBooks Online, payroll, HST/GST, and cleanup work.

Whether you are in trades, farming, services, retail, or another small business, your books should help you understand what is happening in your business — not just sit there until tax time.

Summer is a good time to review where things stand and prepare for the rest of the year.

If your business could use bookkeeping support, send me a message.

I recently had the privilege of completing two successful workshops with CBDC:

• Bookkeeping Foundations for Small Business
• Understanding Business Taxes

Both workshops were designed to help small business owners better understand their numbers, stay organized, and feel more prepared when making business decisions and how to prepare stress free for tax time.

CBDC does excellent work supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses through practical resources, business support, financing options, and helpful workshops.

If you are a small business owner, or thinking about starting a business, I highly recommend checking out the workshops and resources offered through your local CBDC.

Thank you to CBDC Hants-Kings for the opportunity, and thank you to everyone who attended and took part.

Small business owners carry a lot. Sometimes the right information, explained clearly, can make the road ahead feel a little more manageable.

For years I thought confidence came from knowing what to do.

As a teacher, firefighter, and business owner, I've learned the opposite. The people who appear most confident aren't the ones who have all the answers. They're the ones who trust themselves to figure things out when they don't.

Most business owners aren't held back by a lack of knowledge. They are held back by waiting for certainty.

But certainty rarely shows up first.
Action does. Confidence isn't "I know this will work." Confidence is "I'll be okay even if it doesn't."

What's a decision you've delayed because you were waiting to be certain?

Summer Is the Perfect Time to Get Caught Up

Summer is a great time to get your bookkeeping cleaned up before the busy fall season arrives.

If your receipts, bank transactions, HST/GST, payroll, or QuickBooks file have gotten behind, this is a good season to deal with it while things are a little calmer.

At Azure Tide Bookkeeping, I help small business owners get their books organized, accurate, and easier to understand.

Whether you need monthly bookkeeping, a cleanup, QuickBooks Online support, payroll help, or just someone to look things over and point you in the right direction, I have room for a few more bookkeeping clients this summer.

Don’t wait until year-end panic sets in.

Send me a message if you would like to talk about getting your books in better shape

This post is for personal tax filers. Small business filers you have until June 15.

With April 30 approaching, I just want to remind you that if you have not filed your taxes yet, please do not worry.

Life can throw curveballs, and sometimes important things slip through the cracks. That happens more often than people think.

The good news is that there is still help, and even if you end up filing after April 30, it is not the end of the road.

I specialize in helping late filers and people who are multiple years behind. My goal is to make the process feel manageable, not stressful. Just one step at a time.

Drop by and one of our friendly staff will help you get started.
