Subject lines get blamed for low open rates more than almost anything else, but the real problem is usually what's inside. A useful email still gets opened over time, even with a plain subject line, because people learn to trust what shows up in their inbox. A clever subject line on a forgettable email teaches people to stop opening. If your list has gone quiet, look at your last five emails before you touch the subject lines. Chances are the content is the fix, not the headline.
