VetweRx Equine North is participating in a new clinical trial with eQcell
Results from a previous collaborative work showed very positive results. VetweRx’s participation in this study will involve collecting clinical data to help eQcell obtain FDA approval for use of their therapies in the United States. Their stem cells are specifically targeted towards cases where other traditional treatments have been ineffective. Past research shows results in improved lameness scores, strong return-to-work rates, and possible structural joint preservation with no significant adverse reactions.
For this study, the FDA has approved the use of these stem cells for injection of the fetlock joint, carpal joints, stifle joint, tendonitis, and septic joints. Check the original post from VetweRx’s to obtain more information about participation, or contact them directly at (303) 569-4828

🚨VetweRx Equine North is participating in a new clinical trial with eQcell!🚨

2 years ago, we had the opportunity to work with these cells and saw very positive results. We’re excited to continue our partnership with eQcell and can't wait to see how it will benefit our patients and clients.

To qualify, horses must have a lameness that is isolated to one of these joints or tendons. In cases where there is no improvement at week 6, the patient will qualify for a CT of the treated joint for further evaluation.

What is eQcell?🧬🥼🧪
eQcell is a regenerative medicine company based at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College in Canada. Over the last 20 years of research, eQcell has identified several innovative methods to increase stem cell proliferation and viability for use in regenerative treatments. Their product uses neonatal mesenchymal stromal cells, which are activated using proprietary processes to amplify their therapeutic capacity. eQcell has made its initial introduction in veterinary medicine through several clinical trials in Canada and the USA. While working towards improving treatments in animal health, the company aims to utilize a One Health approach in translating their data over to future use in human medicine. eQcell is a member of the Veterinary Innovation Program (VIP) under FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.

New clinical trial at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) using stem cells from eQcell to treat osteoarthritis in fetlock and carpal joints of horses. Previous studies have shown that horses are 3.4 times more likely to return to previous work compared with hyaluronic acid (HA) and that eQcell’s stem cells reduce structural damage within the joints. This study compares two different dosages of stem cells to Prostride® APS so a horse has 67% chance of receiving stem cells in the study. Veterinarian from OVC will drive to farms for treatment and assessment if the horse cannot be transported to OVC. Please contact Dr. Judith Koenig at [email protected] if you would like to learn more about the study and enrolment.

Congratulations to all the authors of this exciting case series published in JAVMA! https://lnkd.in/e24si2JB

This manuscript from Colorado State University reports on the effectiveness of eQcell's activated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in treating bacterial infections, including those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This report is aligned with a case report from the Ontario Veterinary College published in March (https://lnkd.in/eFZKfU27), which reported the survival and full recovery of a foal with severe septic osteomyelitis following the addition of activated MSCs to the treatment protocol.

Use of these cells in cases with naturally occurring infections is based on foundational research from Colorado State University, conducted by Drs. Steve Dow, Lynn Pezzanite, and Laurie Goodrich, which has shown that activated MSCs are more effective at treating infections than non-activated cells. These earlier studies utilized fresh MSCs. These case reports confirm that eQcell's off-the-shelf, ready-to-use, frozen cells have a significant clinical impact in challenging real-life cases.

A key advantage of these activated MSCs over other emerging antimicrobial therapies, such as bacteriophage therapy, is their broad applicability; MSCs are largely bacterial species agnostic, making them particularly suitable for culture-negative infections or those involving multiple bacterial species. The ability of MSCs to secrete enzymes that break down biofilms aids in their effectiveness against resistant infections.
