Last week, Derek Cheung from Building Knowledge Canada attended the OGA Conference 2026, joining industry leaders, utilities, and policy makers for important conversations around the future of energy efficiency and sustainability in housing.

One standout moment was hearing Mattamy Homes Canada CEO Brad Carr highlight ENERGY STAR® for New Homes as the foundation of Mattamy’s commitment to high-performance housing, with more than 33,000 homes labelled to date.

The conference also provided a great opportunity to reconnect with industry colleagues and continue conversations shaping the future of better building across Canada.

Thank you, Ontario Geothermal Association, for such a great event.

Tired of theory that never makes it to site?

The Owens Corning Canada Straube on Tap is back — no fluff, just real-world building science.

Pull up a stool and get straight answers from Dr. John Straube (RDH Building Science | University of Waterloo).

This isn’t a lecture. It’s a hands-on, discussion-driven session built for residential builders and contractors who want practical solutions they can use immediately.
✅ Continuous enclosure — what actually matters
✅ Moisture and performance issues hiding in plain sight
✅ Simplified decision-making without compromising durability
✅ What code changes are coming - and how to stay ahead
✅ Real projects, real mistakes, real fixes

Seats are extremely limited. There are only so many stools — when they’re gone, they’re gone.

🏘️ Building science has an important role to play in the future of affordable housing.

Affordable, accessible, and energy-efficient homes are now a baseline expectation, but delivering all three without driving up costs requires a thoughtful, integrated approach.

Toby Smith (BKC) explores how building science helps align design, construction, and long-term performance so housing remains affordable not just to build, but to live in.

Your team builds homes every day, but are they building with the latest building science in mind?

Building Knowledge Canada’s Building Science Field Pro Training gives builders and trades hands-on, practical training designed to:

✅ Reduce water, humidity, and moisture risks in new and renovated homes and spaces
✅ Apply better building science practices for air barriers, water-resistant barriers, thermal control strategies, and vapour management
✅ Strengthen understanding of indoor air quality, ventilation strategies (HRV/ERV systems), humidity control, and odour/sound mitigation
✅ Develop deeper knowledge of HVAC systems, including furnaces and heat pumps, equipment sizing, installation best practices, field inspections, and system optimization

Hosted at BKC’s Guelph training facility, the program has already been completed by hundreds of builder team members through smaller, focused training groups designed to maximize engagement and real-world learning. The program also serves as a valuable microcredential for homebuilding teams and can be customized to address a builder’s current field challenges.

Gord Cooke and Tracy Archer were honoured to represent Building Knowledge Canada last week by attending the celebration marking 20 years of Doug Tarry Homes building ENERGY STAR® and Net Zero homes.

The event highlighted not only an incredible milestone but also Doug Tarry’s lasting impact on the building industry and community. The Mayor spoke about Doug’s leadership and his ability to inspire others to “jump higher” in their own approach to building better homes.

Joe Vaccaro from EnerQuality Corporation presented one of the original ENERGY STAR® labels and reflected on Doug’s philosophy to “lead and then share,” a mindset that has helped move the entire industry forward.

Gord also congratulated Doug, noting how Doug consistently speaks in terms of “we” rather than “I” — always keeping the larger community and industry in mind.

Congratulations to Doug Tarry and the entire team on this remarkable achievement and continued leadership in high performance housing.

How well does insulation really stop airflow?

In this short Construction Instruction lab demo, a simple ping-pong ball shows the big differences between cellulose, spray foam, and fibreglass, and why fibreglass only performs as intended when it’s in full contact with a solid air barrier. Miss the air barrier, and air moves freely. Get it right, and airflow is dramatically reduced.

A simple visual showing why air barrier contact is critical to insulation performance.
