Most leaders know they should be checking in with their team more consistently. What they are missing is a structure simple enough to actually use.
Claude Silver calls it "Rose Bud Thorn." Three questions: what is going great, what are you looking forward to, and if you had a magic wand, what would you change about your experience right now. She uses it with executives. She uses it at the dinner table with her children.
The reason it works is not the questions themselves. It is what they open up. People share things in that structure they would not volunteer in a standard check-in because the format signals that this is a real conversation, not a status update.
