Health and Safety in the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Ontario Curriculum
The Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Education have partnered to produce a resource guide that identifies learning expectations and opportunities on personal safety, safe behaviours and practices in the current K-12 English and French curricula. The resource guide is called Health and Safety in the Ontario Curriculum: Scope and Sequence of Expectations and shows that a strong foundation for health and safety learning, knowledge and skills exists in Ontario’s schools.

The MOL has made some updates to the classification of a critical injury and we thought you would like to see this.

Clause 1(d) of Regulation 834 stipulates that an injury of a serious nature is a "critical injury" if it involves the fracture of a leg or arm but not a finger or toe. The Ministry of Labour interprets this provision as including the fracture of a wrist, hand, ankle or foot – i.e. any such fracture would constitute a critical injury if it is of a serious nature. While the fracture of a single finger or single toe does not constitute a critical injury, the ministry takes the position that the fracture of more than one finger or more than one toe does constitute a critical injury if it is an injury of a serious nature.

Clause 1(e) of Regulation 834 stipulates that an injury of a serious nature is a "critical injury" if it involves the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot but not a finger or toe. While the amputation of a single finger or single toe does not constitute a critical injury, the ministry takes the position that the amputation of more than one finger or more than one toe does constitute a critical injury if it is an injury of a serious nature.

A critical injury must be reported under s. 51 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act if there is a connection between the hazard that gave rise to the injury and worker health and safety.

This notice is intended to provide clarity around the application of clauses (d) and (e) of the critical injury definition. The legal definition of a critical injury set out in Regulation 834 has not changed.

With the winter weather here Gambit Safety would like to remind you to watch out for potential hazards that could cause you to slip and fall.

As the temperature drops, the number of slips and falls rises.
Winter’s wet and icy conditions are dangerous and workplaces need to take the right precautions. A few important actions can make a big difference to everyone’s safety.

How to prevent falls
■ Keep parking lots and walkways clear of mud, snow and ice
- Don’t get caught by surprise -- monitor the weather and expect
slippery conditions
- Clear ice and snow before workers need to get into or out of the
parking lot
- Use salt, sand or another proven anti-slip material to keep lots and
walkways clear
- Have shovels and gloves available before icing conditions appear
- Ensure workers wear appropriate footwear for conditions
■ Provide good lighting and clear path markings in lots and walkways
■ Clearly identify steps, ramps and other elevation change

Every year on April 28 we pay our respects to, and remember, the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents.

We also honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.

Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each work day.

By working together – with employers, workers and our health and safety partners – we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur.
