Today in our Indigenous History Month series, we celebrate the community of Wunnumin Lake First Nation (WLFN) and their ongoing efforts to protect their lands and waters.
A recent milestone in their stewardship journey was WLFN’s launch of a comprehensive land use planning process—an important step toward self-determined, values-based decision-making. At the heart of this work is a strong commitment to ensuring that cultural values and traditional knowledge are not only respected, but central to how land and resource decisions are made.
As part of this process, WLFN successfully completed its Land Use Planning Framework under National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association program. This achievement laid a powerful foundation by defining the community’s vision, values, and goals, building a robust data system to support planning, and identifying preferred land use categories for their territory.
With this strong groundwork in place, WLFN is now well-positioned to move into the next phase—developing a Land Use Plan that reflects their priorities, knowledge, and aspirations for generations to come.
