Indigenous Nations have long faced unethical and culturally devastating practices in the handling of their data—including the collection, use, storage, and sharing of stories and information about their own peoples, lands, and waters.
Indigenous Data Sovereignty is about reclaiming the stewardship of this sensitive information—on your own terms and in ways that honour your community’s values, traditions, and knowledge. When communities have control over their data, they can decide how it is accessed and shared, empowering informed choices and safeguarding their narrative with the care it deserves.
Keep your eye out here for our weekly Indigenous Data Sovereignty series, where we will explore how Indigenous communities are reclaiming their data and asserting meaningful control over their stories. We will share practical tools and guidelines as well as stories of how Nations are doing this work.
