Hello everyone:
This week marks six months since we were laid off at the airport, due to COVID, and all I can say is WOW. I've never been off work in my life and it's been a long road of soul searching and self reflection. We've kept busy, of course, and every day seems to fly by with chores and checking long awaited tasks off the to-do list. I have never uttered the word bored in my life because there's no excuse to ever say such a thing but I find some days you ponder your purpose in getting out of bed. During the first 75 days of quarantine when the kids were all home and we were making gourmet meals every day we would joke about gaining the quarantine 15. Well....... it's no joke, my friends. The parks and trails were closed and other than running around the block there weren't as many options for working out as we were all used to. We did yoga and home workouts on You Tube and we are fortunate to have a weight bench with a variety of weights available at home but motivation was lacking some days.
Personally I have to exercise every day to feel physically, spiritually, and emotionally stable and the highlight of my day is to get to the park for a long walk and a large dose of vitamin N (nature). Releasing my happy endorphins relieves stress and doesn't cost a penny. The fresh air and vitamin D (sunshine) is an added bonus.
My fitness center closed in March, and with no opening date in the foreseeable future I've had to be imaginative to keep my fitness routine fun and interesting. Having my awesome puppy, Mac, to keep me company has been so much fun but he isn't much of a conversationalist.
My purpose in reaching out today is to offer anyone who is feeling like they're in a slump a chance to pick up their spirits and get moving. I have always said that exercise is the answer to everything. I may be exaggerating a tad bit but exercise does help to improve many problems, such as, low self esteem, weight loss, heart health, diabetes, cancer, to name just a few.
With regards to weight loss management there are many misconceptions I have encountered and they are that cardiovascular exercise is your best friend when you are trying to lose weight when in reality it's weight bearing/resistance training that is the best for taking and keeping weight off. The more muscle you have on your body the more fat/calories you will burn long after you've finished exercising.
This all leads me to my grand idea! ...........
We park at my house in Wellington, walk to Laurie park (one mile away), walk around the park, perform some body weight/resistance primal movement exercises (demonstrated and assisted by me), walk back to my place and there you have it - you got your 10,000 steps (what we should all get every day) and a great workout in two hours. If the weather is crappy we can exercise here at my house. I have everything we need for a full body work out.
I don't care what day we do it. I was thinking a Saturday or Sunday afternoon might work best for many people but I'm open for suggestions. I think we could all use more movement in our lives and I'm going to the park anyway, so why not join me? Bring your dog(s) and they can have some fun too.
