Christina's Health and Fitness Services

Christina's Health and Fitness Services I strive to live a healthy life every day and I really enjoy helping others reach their goals.

After many years of trying to decide what career would make me happy I knew I had to specialize in something related to fitness and nutrition as they were/are my biggest passions. Losing both my parents to cancer was an eye opener for me and I quickly realized that life is too short and what I eat and how much exercise I get every day are directly linked to my longevity. I went back to school in 2

009 to take Health, Wellness and Recreation at Eastern College and the one-year diploma course encompassed everything I was interested in. I now work as a Personal Trainer, Nutrition consultant and Boot Camp instructor. I would like to build my client base and help as many people as I can. Nothing gives me more pleasure than knowing that I have assisted someone in getting one step closer to happiness.

I love winter! I have to get outside 365 days a year (for my mental health) and nine times out of ten it’s to Laurie park. Today was one of those days that I was amazed at the beauty around me. I love Nova Scotia and the changing seasons ❄️🌞

If any of you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) you should request a UV light on your wish list. I got one 10 years ago and it’s the best purchase I ever made. When the sun disappears this time of year for days/weeks on end many of us get down due to the lack of vitamin D. Set this up when you’re having your breakfast for 20 minutes and you’ll feel more energized. Hang in there everyone. Brighter days ahead🌞

Next walking/Laurie park hike/work-out date is planned for Sunday, 1 pm. Hope you can make it!!

Well that was awesome!! Thank you Courtney Haynes (accompanied by her dogs Charlie and Roxie) for the great work out! 10,000 steps with some rock lifting and what a beautiful day.
Next chance will be Wednesday, September 23rd if anyone is interested in joining us (depending on the hurricane of course). We can decide on a time closer to the day. Happy Saturday everyone!

Hello everyone:
This week marks six months since we were laid off at the airport, due to COVID, and all I can say is WOW. I've never been off work in my life and it's been a long road of soul searching and self reflection. We've kept busy, of course, and every day seems to fly by with chores and checking long awaited tasks off the to-do list. I have never uttered the word bored in my life because there's no excuse to ever say such a thing but I find some days you ponder your purpose in getting out of bed. During the first 75 days of quarantine when the kids were all home and we were making gourmet meals every day we would joke about gaining the quarantine 15. Well....... it's no joke, my friends. The parks and trails were closed and other than running around the block there weren't as many options for working out as we were all used to. We did yoga and home workouts on You Tube and we are fortunate to have a weight bench with a variety of weights available at home but motivation was lacking some days.
Personally I have to exercise every day to feel physically, spiritually, and emotionally stable and the highlight of my day is to get to the park for a long walk and a large dose of vitamin N (nature). Releasing my happy endorphins relieves stress and doesn't cost a penny. The fresh air and vitamin D (sunshine) is an added bonus.
My fitness center closed in March, and with no opening date in the foreseeable future I've had to be imaginative to keep my fitness routine fun and interesting. Having my awesome puppy, Mac, to keep me company has been so much fun but he isn't much of a conversationalist.
My purpose in reaching out today is to offer anyone who is feeling like they're in a slump a chance to pick up their spirits and get moving. I have always said that exercise is the answer to everything. I may be exaggerating a tad bit but exercise does help to improve many problems, such as, low self esteem, weight loss, heart health, diabetes, cancer, to name just a few.
With regards to weight loss management there are many misconceptions I have encountered and they are that cardiovascular exercise is your best friend when you are trying to lose weight when in reality it's weight bearing/resistance training that is the best for taking and keeping weight off. The more muscle you have on your body the more fat/calories you will burn long after you've finished exercising.
This all leads me to my grand idea! ...........
We park at my house in Wellington, walk to Laurie park (one mile away), walk around the park, perform some body weight/resistance primal movement exercises (demonstrated and assisted by me), walk back to my place and there you have it - you got your 10,000 steps (what we should all get every day) and a great workout in two hours. If the weather is crappy we can exercise here at my house. I have everything we need for a full body work out.
I don't care what day we do it. I was thinking a Saturday or Sunday afternoon might work best for many people but I'm open for suggestions. I think we could all use more movement in our lives and I'm going to the park anyway, so why not join me? Bring your dog(s) and they can have some fun too.

Exercising outdoors in the winter wonderland we have in Nova Scotia is always interesting. I love being outside 365 days a year but I know many people don't.
Just remember the number one rule - there is no bad weather, just bad clothing choices! Dress in layers so that you can take something off, if need be. It's better to have more sweaters, than not enough. Once you get a chill it's very difficult to warm up. Tuck in your under shirt so the air doesn't blow up; put your socks over your long john's; wear mittens, not gloves (it's easier to keep your fingers warm if they are touching each other); wear wool anything; it wicks away the moisture. Always wear a hat because we lose a lot of body heat that way. Wear a wind breaker on the outside to avoid the brutal windchill from getting to you. If it's really cold out wear a baklava or a scarf over your nose and mouth.

Some days are wet and unpleasant but most days you will appreciate the fresh air and vitamin D that will seep into your body. The air is always fresher in winter too!! Many people suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) this time of year when the days are short and they benefit greatly from whatever sunshine they can get. I know from personal experience that I NEED sunshine in the winter to feel human.

Another very important rule to remember when exercising outside in the winter is to drink lots of water. In winter we don't realize that we are dehydrated as easily as we do in the summer due to the sweating factor, but it's more common to get dehydrated in the winter. Pack a water bottle.

There are so many fun things to do outside in the winter, such as skating, skiing, hiking, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling and walking your dog.

If you're looking for a buddy to join you, I'm available!
Have a fun winter everyone :)

Do any of you suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) this time of year? I do, big time, and a few years ago I treated myself to one of the UV lights (mentioned in this article) and when you have day after day of no sun and you feel your mood dipping ever so low it can be your best friend. You can now try one out for yourself from any of the Halifax Public Libraries (free of charge). Everyday sunshine!
