On Tuesday February 4, 2025 at approximately 09:05 p.m, Hamilton Police were dispatched to a condominium building located near James Street South and Bold Street to assist the Hamilton Fire Department with a transformer fire.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the door to the electrical room had been breached, and damage had been done to one of the building’s transformers which caused a fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and officers discovered evidence that suggested that this was an attempt to steal copper wiring from the transformer. No suspects were located at that time.

Hamilton Police now believe that three men and two women are responsible for this incident. All were white, 30-50 years old, and wearing dark clothing. Of note, one of the males appeared to be wearing a high-visibility jacket.

Hamilton has seen a significant jump in copper related thefts over the past few years. In 2022, Hamilton Police investigated 40 occurrences, however 2023 had 119 occurrences and 2024 came in at 105.
