Happy Pride Month! 🌈

I love the rainbow flag and have always loved it because perhaps the most open, supportive, s*x- positive and gender-progressive spaces that I've been in have been in the LGBTQ community.

This is the community that truly practices the old saying ' come as you are'. As a racialized and an immigrant woman, LGBTQ spaces are the safest spaces I have experienced. So to me, this flag is a flag of safety, acceptance, and love for people as are they are.

To all my LGBTQ siblings, thank you for creating such safe spaces of acceptance. May the world return that love that you keep putting out.

It was wonderful to engage with a lively and enthusiastic group of folks who believe in peace-building through dialogue and negotiation. The misconceptions about mediation often stop people from reaching out for help.

✖️Mediation is a sign of weakness. Some folks think that reaching out to a third person is shameful because they should be able to deal with their conflict.
✅ In reality, mediation is a practical and often more efficient way to resolve disputes, allowing both parties to maintain control over the outcome.

✖Mediation is only for minor disputes.
✅Contrary to this myth, the flexibility and adaptability of the mediation process make it suitable for a wide range of conflicts.

✖️Mediators make decisions for the parties.
✅Unlike judges or arbitrators, mediators do not impose decisions on the parties involved. Instead, they facilitate communication and help parties reach a mutually satisfactory agreement.

✖️Mediation is a form of therapy.
✅ Mediation is a very goal-orientated process, in which although we talk about the past, our focus is on the future relationships.

🌾I first heard this quote from one of my mediation teachers and it really struck a chord with me.

"Never cut what you can untie," is a well-known and thought-provoking maxim, by Joseph Joubert who was a French moralist and essayist in the 18th century. It speaks to the importance of finding non-destructive, thoughtful, and patient solutions to problems and conflicts.

Untie-ing something might at first take a little longer time, but what you are left with is the object intact as opposed to destroyed.

✅Mediation establishes a safe and a neutral environment to talk and negotiate. In a neutral space there will not be feelings and emotions attached to the events of that space.

✅It opens the channels of communications that have been closed for a while.

✅It identifies what the underlying issues and what are people's interests.

✅It helps you collaborate by exploring different options and generating creative solutions.

✅It fosters comprise and negotiations so the interests of both parties are met.

✅And afterward, an agreement is written and formalized on everything the parties agreed to.

This process helps people reach long-lasting agreements because they were involved in the process of option-generating and there was space for their feelings to be heard and talked of in a constructive manner.

🤝 The Art of Mediation: A Method of Conflict Resolution 🤝

I've been doing a lot of research into mediation recently and one of my findings has been how much mediation is misunderstood and how many people don't know what exactly is mediation and what a mediator does.

Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process of conflict resolution in which a neutral third party, known as a mediator, helps disputing parties engage in constructive dialogue and reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

Mediation offers a peaceful, non-confrontational approach to finding solutions that work for everyone involved. It brings conflicting parties together, guided by a neutral third party (the mediator) who helps facilitate open communication and mutual understanding. 🗣️👂
