Last Saturday, the Public Advisory Committee took part in a field tour where we visited multiple sites that were planted over this past Summer. We were able to compare burned areas which were salvaged or left unsalvaged as well as get a hands on look at some interesting silvicultural treatments including mycorrhizal inoculation (beneficial fungus) of planted seedlings and fertilizer treatments. Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the lovely weather with us!

The 2023 wildfire season had a tremendous impact on the Upper Hay Region, burning over 580,000 ha of tenured forest.

Most of this forest has started to regenerate naturally. However, to assist this natural regeneration, the forestry companies are planting 6,000 ha in the most severely burned areas. This includes new approaches, such as the introduction of pine to help re-establish a healthy forest.

This improves the future resilience of the region's forests to both natural and human-influenced disturbance!
