Sorry I’m posting a bit late today, I got carried away in the kitchen and ended up making 20 jars of spaghetti sauce out of a box of Roma Tomatoes I bought from Jeff and Wrena at Even Side Farm…seems I got inspired from the Fall Fair this year, what a fabulous day it was, Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers for always making it a special day. Summer is over, but don’t worry there’s still lots to do, starting tomorrow (Thursday) the Seabreeze Games nights are back beginning with Trivia starting at 8pm with their a la carte menu back as well for dinner. Friday there will be a Celebration of Life for Peter Mills at the Hall 2-5pm and the Night Market is still on ‘Weather Permitting’ at Baird and Co Nursery and Saturday has several events, beginning with the Farmers Market (now only on Saturdays) still 10:30-1pm, at the Hall Jenna Carters ‘Hornby the Way I Remember it’ Art Show and Book relaunch opens and is on till Sunday. And for Saturday Evening Denver Venoit Quartet with Road Tye and local artist Molly Blaze will be performing at JoeKing Park (tickets on sale at the GasBar) and on Sunday Hornby Recreation is hosting The Terry Fox Run for Cancer (1K,3K or 5K run or walk) signup at the Coop Porch at 9am. And next Wednesday HITS is hosting an OpenMic night at the Painted Door Theatre behind the Hall come and watch or perform starts at 7:30pm. And of course, ongoing through to Oct 2 is the Gordon Payne Art Exhibit at the Art Centre. Well, the 6pm Ferry on Monday did quite the dance of farewell to summer, with its water cannons going it was quite the sight spinning around in front of the Thatch, the La Fille looked as though it could have been washing the cars with their water canon as the ferry spun around, I say (although we didn’t get out on our boat this year) the wave off was a great success with DJ Pat getting us up to dance and the Dragon Boat Ladies and a Gentleman brightening the view in their fabulously colorful outfits. As the Wave off means the Summer Season is officially over, that means its time for the Fall Fair – the theme this year is The Essential Wheelbarrow! Get your busy with decorating and creating your Wheelbarrow garden, making and Baking and Preserves and of course harvest your best Flowers, Fruits and Veggies. Programs / Competition Classes Brochures are available on the Coop Porch and under the Tourist Map on the Printshop Building as well as at till 3 in Coop, pre-registration will be on the Coop Porch Saturday. See you ALL at the Fair to Cheer on the Zucchini Car Racers, get started on your Christmas Shopping at the vendor tents, grab lunch from the food vendors and then wait in line for a piece of award-winning Pie & make sure to put your Bid in at the Harvest Basket Auction all while listening to local minstrels in the background. Also, the winner of this years Quilt will be announced at 1:45pm, so make sure you get your tickets ASAP. As for the rest of the week, Saturday is a busy day starting with the Farmers Market, in the evening you have your choice of watching Back to the Future 1 & 2 at the Hall (doors at 4pm) or listening to Angel Forrest debuting her latest album ‘It’s a Beautiful Life’ with special guests Wailing Station at Fossil Beach Farm and enjoy their last BBQ of the season (BBQ starts at 1pm & the music starts at 5pm). And a Reminder the Friday Night Market at Baird n Co Nursery will continue for now as weather permits. The last week before school starts and summer is officially over and things are winding down with the weekly activities…Fossil Beach is hosting their last Sunday Session this Sunday, The Farmers Market will now be on Saturdays only till the end of September & the Friday Night Market at Baird n Co Nursery will continue for now as weather permits. For the kiddies HIES & Early Literacy self guided Story Walk is set up until September 9th on Big Tree Trail starting at the School Playground and featuring P***y Cat, P***y Cat, Where have you Been by Dan Bar-el with Illustrations by Rae Mate will continue. This weekend there are several events happening, beginning with La Chuparosa at JoeKing on Friday night, which means you can check out the Artworks at the Dubois Family Art & Music Festival before the show at JoeKing & then attend the Dubois’s Music night on Saturday with Shaken Vespers and Lucky Strike the Festival is on till Sunday at the Hall. Also, on Sunday the Art Centre is hosting the Opening Event of the Gordon Payne show which runs until Oct 26th (full details in the Tribune this week). Reminder to make sure to buy your Quilt Tickets (it’s on display on the Coop Porch) the Draw will happen at the Fall Fair on September 13th and with the Fall Fair coming up soon, they are still looking for volunteers (contact details in the Tribune). This week’s entertainment begins Friday Night with a Rock show at JoeKing featuring Hornby’s youth in Power Tools and Skelokastser on as well on Friday the New Thatch Pub is turning 1 year and having a Birthday Party so Dressup in your 70’s to 2026’s finest and enjoy Happy Hour Pricing, Live Music and Prizes. On Saturday at the Farmers Market Shirley Wyndam’s Ice Dye stand is having a Season End Sale (of course lots of other goodies still to pickup at the Market and as always Sunday Evening Fossil Beach has live music this week our own DJ Dangerous Cargo will be getting every one out of their chairs and on their feet dancing. I was a bit tired last night when I posted and I seem to have forgot the most important info to let you know – this year’s Fall Fair Brochure is in this week’s Tribune, with the schedule of events and more importantly the Competition Categories….make sure you hang onto it, this years theme is The Wheel Barrow, so start creating (also they are looking for Volunteers), if you don’t receive a Tribune they are available at the Coop, under the Tourist Map on our Printshop, at Ford Cove, The Sea Breeze and Fossil Beach Farm or by emailing [email protected] and I will put one in the Freepost for you.

First off, this week I want to make sure everyone is aware of the Island Trust Public Hearing regarding reviewing the Community Plan and Land Use Bylaws, this will begin at noon during the regular Local Trust meeting on Tuesday the 1st see page 9 of the Tribune for all the details and page 10 for the Hybrid login info if you wish to attend remotely. Also, on page 8 the CVRD is offering a rebate for Septic System maintenance (some may find useful). As far as activities, Summer is winding down but there’s lots still happening. Starting with Stephanie Wells art show at the Hall closing tomorrow (Thursday) & in the back of the Hall at The Painted Door Theatre Kim June Johnson with Scott White will be performing ‘An Intimate Night of Music & Stories’ for two nights Thursday & Friday (tickets at the gasbar). At the Spark HIRRA’s Water Testing program is on Saturday for container pickup and Sunday for drop off (see insert in Tribune for details), also on Saturday and Sunday the Natural History Centre is hosting a two day workshop ‘Bound by Nature Revisited’ with fiber artist Nora Ready at New Horizons (contact The Natural History Centre for ticket info) and on Saturday evening at the Hall Summer Soft is playing along with Doohickey Cubicle (tickets at the Gasbar) and Sunday Evening Fossil Beach has Avery Jane to entertain you while you enjoy your BBQ dinner and lastly on Monday night Central Cinema is featuring ‘Back to the Future’ at the Hall. It’s a busy week ahead – starting tomorrow (Thursday) with The FINAL DAY of the season to see the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park and last day of the Art Show featuring Michelle Nyberg & Jenevieve McCrae-King at the Hall. If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure you may enjoy an Intertidal Biology Walk at Middle Bay of Anderson Dr, sponsored by Hornby Natural History. Then on Friday there is a new Art Show featuring photos by Paul Wullum and paintings and sculptures by David N Dorington at the Hall this will be on till Sunday. Friday evening JoeKing Park will be hopping to Dirty Bellows Y2K Medley Latin Polka. If you feel like a quick trip off Hornby - Denman Arts is hosting their studio tour on Saturday and Sunday (a lot of the studios are on the Denman Bus route). Central Cinema will be showing a double bill on Monday night with Muppets from Space and Spaceballs. And lastly Stephanie Wells will be having an Art Show at the Hall from Tuesday thru Thursday featuring her paintings. What a day – traveled to Nanaimo for an overnight visit with my daughter Sarah and grandson Rio, we spent a few hours at the beach where Rio took charge of throwing Puddles her Kong to fetch in the water. I forgot how busy a three year old is and add a couple dogs into the mix (poor Elsie is not a fan of either Puddles or Rio today, she just wanted to lay under the tree in he shade and be left alone)….well Sarah is trying to get Rio to sleep, apparently, he’s not tired even though the dogs haven’t moved since we got home other than when he covered them in blankets and then wrapped Puddles in a whole roll of p**p bags. All is quiet now so I’m going to try and get the paper posted with the week’s highlights – First of the Hornby Festival Art Show continues until Saturday as well as two Classical performances on Friday and Saturday evening with a special Free Classical Kids performance at 10am on Friday. If you haven’t been to The Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park you have only three more days to do so, tomorrow Thursday the 6th, next Tuesday the 11th and then Thursday the 13th is the final day. This Sunday, the Annual Run Around the Island Fundraiser for JoeKing Park begins at the beach in front of the SeaBreeze at 8am. Monday evening at the Hall Michelle Nyberg & Jenevieve McCrae-Kings Art Show Opening Reception, with the show continuing thru to Thursday. And next Wednesday Hornby Denman Health has Bev Spring with her talk on Living to Die and Dying to Live at the Denman Activity Centre on Denman (contact HDHCS for possible carpools) and in the evening the Marimba Band is playing at Baird and Co Nursery. I’ll start with a couple of Date changes (due to unusually poor weather) for previously posted events – first the Annual Community Fundraiser Celebration of Summer with Fine Food, Music and an Auction at the Cardboard House has moved to tonight Wednesday the 29th (there may still be tickets available) contact www.hornbycommunityfund.org. Second the Annual Sandcastle Contest has been moved from Saturday August 1st to Sunday August 2nd. Now for the weeks highlights – on Thursday Hornby Natural History continues with their summer programing with a presentation about Learning to Care for the Ocean through Community and Recreation at New Horizons at 1pm – also on Thursday the Hornby Festival begins with a Free concert featuring the evening Headliners at Grassy Point at 2pm, then a Meet the Artists for the Festival Art show at the Community Hall at 5pm and the Mainstage at Rosemuir Farm official Traditional Elder Welcome begins at 7:30 with the headline music act following – the festival events continue till August 8th with a fabulous lineup of Music, Art and Indigenous Programs – The full program guide is available on the Coop porch and various other locations around the island and tickets are still available at the Festival office or online www.hornbyfest.com/tickets. I want to start out by saying that Jason & I would like to send out huge hugs to Jamara, her family and staff and to let everyone know that due to a fire Forage will be Closed till further notice. We would also like to let you know that there is a Go-Fund-Me set up to help with the rebuild at www.gofundme.com/f/help-forage-farm-kitchen-rebuild or you can send an etransfer directly to [email protected] .

This week will be a busy one, beginning on Thursday with a presentation on Hornby’s Water at New Horizons at 1pm & later in the evening the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park is Premiering Gaia: Theatre of Fire with the Borealis String Quartet at 6:30pm. Friday as always has the Night Market at Baird and Co, at 5pm. Saturday has a fabulous family event ‘The New Old Time Chautauqua’ beginning with The Big Parade which leaves New Horizon’s at 1pm walking to JoeKing (everyone is welcome to march – muster at 12:45), the day continues with Circus Workshops, Food & Craft Vendors and The Big Circus Show at 6pm followed by Punk on the Porch at 8pm. Sunday is also loaded with family fun events, the Chatauqua continues at JoeKing with Family baseball and a Community Mural project both starting at 11am followed by a community Potluck dinner at 6pm. If Bugs are your kids thing Jala will be hosting a Special Drop-in Early Literacy Event at Baird and Co Nursery featuring Bugs at 11am. And to close out the evening the Annual Community Fundraiser Celebration of Summer with Fine Food, Music and an Auction at the Cardboard House contact [www.hornbycommunityfund.org] for more info and to purchase tickets. Beginning on Sunday and continuing on Monday is the Annual Hornby Arts Summer Studio Tour at 11am – 3pm, self guided Maps available on the Coop Porch, The Art Centre, The Farmers Market & under the Tourist Map of Hornby on our shop in Ringside. And Lastly on Sunday evening head down to Fossil Beach for a BBQ dinner with live music beginning at 5pm. On Monday night is the Central Cinema and Conservancy Hornby Island presentation of 'The Salish Sea Trilogy' doors at 6:30 and there is a Q&A after the screening - tickets available online at [https://www.conservancyhornbyisland.org/] also on Monday the SeaBreeze is hosting Games night alternating Trivia and Music Bingo as well as Live music outdoors Wednesday with Deni and guests at 7:30 till late. Reminder to make sure to buy your Quilt Tickets (its on display on the Coop Porch)…Drive Safe and watch for Cyclists & Pedestrians…If you want more information on the above events and more as well as current, business, restaurant and tasting room hours of operation, please check out the Tribune each week and we encourage everyone to support our advertisers.
