Helping Houston better prepare and build a more wildfire resilient community through postive education on the FireSmart BC program

Today is Wildland Firefighter Day, a chance to celebrate and honour wildland firefighters as well as all the fire support staff who make their work possible.
In B.C. we are grateful everyday for the work of our firefighters, they are dedicated,
professional, humble and always willing to help whether here at home or around the world.

Did you know that Wildfire embers also known as firebrands can travel on wind currents over 2kms?

These small issues are small and easy to amend, taking care of them can make your home more resilient

Wildfires can grow rapidly when dry fuels, wind, and weather conditions align. The Peacock Mountain Wildfire serves as a reminder that wildfire risk isn't far away—it's often right outside our community.

Reducing wildfire risk starts at home. By maintaining your property and removing combustible materials, you help protect your neighbours, your community, and your home.

Once you’re FireSmart, you can’t unsee the risks.

Messy gutters, combustible materials stored next to the house, and flammable vegetation all put your house at risk during wildfire season.

Luckily, you can FireSmart your property in a few simple steps:

🍁 Clear leaves and debris from your gutters
🧯 Store flammable materials at least 10 metres from your home
🪴 Swap combustible plants for fire-resistant vegetation.

Tip of the day! 🦊

In the extended zone (10 to 30 metres) around your house, thinning and pruning trees can slow down wildland fire spread.

Remove low-hanging branches up to 2m from the ground.

Your campfire might look small, but the forest sees it differently. One stray ember is all it takes. 🔥

Before you leave, soak, stir and soak again.

And this season, please don’t feed the wildfires.
