If you practise in Huntsville you already know the problem. In a town this size, a client walking into a building with one name on the door has told half the street something about themselves before they have even sat down.

At 1 Crescent Rd there are a dozen businesses. Lawyers, therapists and creatives. A food company. Someone picking up mail, someone else booking a boardroom. A person coming to see you is just a person coming into the building.

The Algonquin Room is bookable by the hour or in blocks: soft seating, lamps, a door that actually closes, and a waiting area shared with the entire floor.

That last part is the feature, not the compromise.

We are closed today, Monday October 12, for the holiday. Reception will be back on Tuesday morning at regular hours.

The Thanksgiving list is always longer than the Thanksgiving weekend.

Water off. Dock out. Eaves. The thing in the boathouse you have been meaning to deal with since June. Every year the plan is Saturday and Sunday, and every year it is Monday afternoon and you are wrapping pipes in the dark with a headlamp on.

If your work travels, you do not have to drive home Monday night just to be at a desk Tuesday morning.

Stay the extra day. Close the place properly, then take a real desk in town on Tuesday: 1 Gig internet, parking out front, two minutes from downtown Huntsville. Drive home Wednesday afternoon on an empty highway instead.

Nobody warns you that the hardest part of working for yourself is not the money.

It is October. The light goes at five, the summer people leave, and if you work alone the days start blurring into one long Tuesday. Almost everyone we know who works from home hits that wall in the fall, and almost none of them read it as a work problem. They think something is wrong with them.

It is not a discipline problem. It is a room problem.

The Hub is run by NewVU, a not for profit, and this is the actual reason the room exists. Not desks. People to say good morning to before the dark part of the year starts.

Q4 starts Thursday. That is not a threat, it is just a fact worth ten minutes of your attention.

Fourteen Mondays. That is the entire rest of the year. Whatever you told yourself in January is either happening inside that window or moving to next year, and both are allowed. The only bad outcome is finding out in December that you never actually decided.

So here is the ten minute version. Write down the three things that would make this a good year. Cross off the one you already know you are not doing. Put the other two on a calendar.

That is it. That is the whole exercise.

Save this and do it Thursday morning. If ten quiet minutes are hard to find at home, we have a room and a kettle.

Everyone in Muskoka has taken an important call from a parked car.

Outside the pharmacy. In the grocery lot. Engine off in October because the heater is too loud on the microphone. It is a rite of passage and it is also completely unnecessary.

There is a room here roughly the size of a parked car, except it has a door, a desk, a chair, and internet that does not drop when a truck goes by. Coworking members can book it by the hour for the call that cannot happen at the next desk.

Small room. Absurdly useful.

Nobody sends you a reminder that grant season opened.

Every fall a round of small business and not for profit funding quietly comes online, and every fall a good chunk of Muskoka misses it. Not because the applications are hard. Because writing one takes three uninterrupted hours that never appear on their own.
