AI confidence grows when people can experiment, question, and see AI tools directly applied to valuable work.

Differly recently led a practical Fundamentals of AI workshop with the team at Own the Podium, exploring how AI works, where it can add value, and how to use it thoughtfully and securely.

• Participants learned how to use AI more effectively across a broad range of tasks and had the opportunity to practice AI prompting hands-on as a group.

• We shared relevant examples and demos of both basic and advanced use cases, helping people imagine new applications for AI in their work.

• Participants left with a shared understanding of what AI is and is not, what is possible with the latest tools available to them, and an up-to-date view of security risks and safety best practices.

A big thank you to the Own the Podium team for bringing curiosity and energy to the session, and to Ian Clark, Rekha Sharma, and Patrice Belmonte from our team for leading the conversation and hands-on learning.

What works today won’t necessarily create value tomorrow.

That’s the tension leaders must manage: exploit what the organization already does well, while continuing to explore what comes next.

Optimization protects today’s value. It improves performance, strengthens the core, and keeps the organization competitive.

Exploration creates tomorrow’s options. It asks what is changing, where new value may emerge, and what the organization needs to begin testing now.

One should not come at the expense of the other.

The strongest organizations manage both intentionally, investing across near-term priorities, emerging opportunities, and longer-term possibilities.

Three separate AI projects? It’s more valuable to view them as one learning system.

You can use AI to make it much easier to find documents on SharePoint.

AI-assisted creation lets you rapidly turn access to that knowledge into something useful.

Beautiful, intuitive dashboards can be built with AI to visualize the results of your work.

The connecting layers that turn siloed experiments into meaningful, ongoing capabilities are strategy and governance. Without them, organizations accumulate disconnected experiments. With them, they build confidence and repeatable capabilities that scale.

The safest innovation strategy isn’t one big bet. It’s many small, measurable ones.

“Fail fast” only works when teams know what they’re testing, how they’ll measure the outcome and what evidence will tell them whether to continue or stop.

That discipline matters.

Without it, innovation becomes a constant brainstorm: plenty of ideas, little action and growing fatigue across the organization.

A strong experimentation process creates a different signal: ideas are welcome, learning is expected and evidence decides what moves forward.

A promising AI tool can still fail in a promising organization. They often do.

The reasons for failed adoption of any technology are well understood. The problem to be solved may be unclear. Workflows may not be understood. People may not have the support to change how they work. Data may not be clean and available. Ownership and structure for pilots may be lacking.

Differly treats AI adoption as an organizational system. Business, people and technology are intertwined. Strategy determines the direction. Tools, data and governance provide the foundations for progress. Change and adoption support allows that progress to materialize as impact. If one strand moves without the others, progress stalls.

Most teams we work with begin their AI journey with writing - touching up emails and drafting documents. That's a useful start, but there is so much more value to gain with the same tools people already have access to.

Differly's Fundamental Five simplifies the question of "how else can we work with AI?" into five practical approaches: Planning, Problem-Solving, Finding, Creating, and Converting.

At most organizations we start working with, about 70% of staff are only using one or two of these. Building productive AI use across all five areas helps teams get more from the tools they already have.

Using AI for writing might save you some time. Using AI for difficult problem-solving, planning, or creative tasks might speed up processes by weeks or unlock new capabilities that weren't previously possible.

The pressure to “do more with AI” can make adoption feel like a race.

It is more useful to see it as measured progression along a predictable path. Organizations do not typically jump from a few experiments into complex automations with AI securely connected to their data. Each stage in the journey builds upon the last one and requires a certain mix of skills, guardrails, data, support systems and capacity for change.

Ideas are only the beginning. Innovation requires discipline across the full cycle: from framing the opportunity and testing its value to scaling what works and governing the portfolio behind it.
Missing one of these stages can result in promising ideas stalling in pilot purgatory or becoming Innovation Theatre. Plenty of activity, very little meaningful change.
Organizations that innovate consistently do not rely on inspiration alone. They build the structures, decision-making and financial discipline that help good ideas survive.
