Positive Attitude Safety System Inc.

Positive Attitude Safety System Inc. For over 30 years, Positive Attitude Safety System (PASS) has specializes in establishing Positive and Proactive Safety Culture of Continuous Improvement.

The concepts and philosophy of what was to evolve into the Positive Attitude Safety System (PASS) were introduced to Cominco’s Sullivan Mine in the mid 1980’s by James S. Burns, a Canadian consultant. This early and crude prototype achieved significant results and in the early 1990’s was refined into the Positive Attitude Safety System with the key process components and with Jim Burns’ unique imp

lementation approach. The PASS is based on the concepts of Learned Helplessness, Positive Reinforcement (shaping of behaviours) and Intervention Therapy, which Jim Burns studied for six years at the Universities of Victoria and Calgary. Since then, Jim Burns and his colleagues have been working with tens of thousands of people in hundreds of Natural Resource and Heavy Industrial organizations; such as, mining, manufacturing, stevedoring, transportation and construction operations in Canada, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Jamaica, Tanzania, Malaysia, Argentina, Pakistan and the United States of America. The PASS is a dynamic process that ensures the transfer of all PASS technology to the Client. The client’s dependence on the consultant’s content expertise is not desired nor is it an objective. The goal is to establish a relationship which fosters “ownership in” and “stewardship of” the PASS process by the client. The consultant provides training, coaching, monitoring and evaluation to the client’s organization. The PASS consists of Safety Huddles, Charting of crew-defined Safe Days, Check-Offs, the Report-Down System, Positive Observation and Feedback and Safety Improvement Huddles.

I am pleased to see New Gold’s New Afton Mine win the John T. Ryan Safety Regional Metal Trophy for BC/Yukon for the 9th time in 10 years. They truly set the 'Gold Standard' for safety. Since 2007, they have benefited from PASS, and I have enjoyed consulting with them. Their excellent safety culture was developed by great leaders and teams. Brucejack Mine, also was a PASS client, and they had made significantly improvements to their safety culture and achieved superb results in 2021.

PASS Inc. assists organizations to develop a Safety Culture in which the organizational members value having a Positive and Proactive Safety Attitude, which underpins their safety decisions and actions. As a result of this mindset, they look for every opportunity to embrace the principles of Continuous Improvement in order to make their workplace safer for themselves and their fellow workers, and leave it safer for their cross-shift. We call this Safety Culture SupLex®. Jim Burns, President and Safety Architect, PASS Inc.

Just an Excellent example of a Super A!

Such a great story of the team developing the solution and implementing it! In some operations, the Technician would have hidden their injury and the supervisor would have encouraged (and perhaps rewarded) the non-reporting!!!

We have come a long way from the old approach to Safety reporting injuries. The ‘C’s’ are now opportunities for A’s!

Hats off to Bill and his group!

I just read an incredible and fascinating book by an old mining friend, Tom Williams. His story of being a ‘Tramp Miner’ is so well told and I found it hard to put down. Excellent details and descriptions of the old conventional mining methods. But more importantly, the different approaches to mining at many mining operations. Certainly, in the old days, there was no desire for ‘new ideas’ and/or continuous improvement in any field of mining (as I experienced starting my consulting career in the mid 80’s at the Sullivan Mine). The book does not disappoint. Available on Amazon...

Just found this example of how the PASS' common process and language migrates to other areas of an operation. The dining room at the Ekati Diamond Mine's camp back in 2004. Blue is an A Meal, Gray is a B meal and Red is a C meal. To find out why it was a C meal, the cooks just had to talk to the workers in the 'dish pit'....what was the main food left on the plates? They even published the daily results.

I am happy to announce that Vic Seedwell is implementing and establishing PASS at the Lynas Corporation’s Mt Weld Central Lanthanide Deposit (CLD) located in Western Australia. This is one of the highest-grade rare earth deposits in the world. The Mount Weld rare earth deposit sits in a two billion-year-old volcanic plug. I welcome Mt Weld to the PASS family.

It was a pleasure to present our 4-Day PASS Masters' Course (my 27th course) in Kamloops BC. A great group from New Gold's New Afton Mine! Thanks to Justin and his Safety team for all their work behind the scenes. This is the first time I have presented this course without Claire being at the actual course. She is responsible for most of preparations and organization of the PASS Material, handouts and files. The course was a success and we all enjoyed ourselves.
