Back in 2008, David and I had the incredible opportunity to produce a documentary called Sledhead, following Canada’s Sledge Hockey Team (now known as Canada’s National Para Hockey Team) on their quest to become world champions. For a full year, we travelled alongside the team, from Japan to Norway to Newfoundland, and ultimately to the World Championships in Boston, Massachusetts.
The finished film went on to screen at film festivals around the world, aired on CTV here in Canada, and a version was also featured on ParalympicSport.TV. But what has always meant the most to us was the chance to really get to know these athletes, their determination, humour, and the camaraderie that drives the team.
It’s been especially meaningful to see that some of the men we spent time with back in 2008 were still representing Team Canada at the Winter Paralympics in Milano Cortina, bringing home a silver medal. 🥈 What a journey.
We’re also thrilled to see more and more people discovering this incredible sport. In fact, a new record for the highest Para ice hockey attendance at a Paralympic Winter Games was set earlier today, such a great sign for the continued growth of the game. 🙌
If you’ve never watched Para Ice Hockey, you really should. The speed, skill, and physicality are incredible. Try to catch a rebroadcast of the gold medal game if you can - it’s well worth it. 🏒🔥
Moments like this remind me how lucky we were to document a small slice of such an inspiring story.
