Senior Fitness Friday: Gentle Strength for Getting Back Into Movement 💪
If it's been a few years since you last exercised, you're not alone - and you're not behind. Many seniors we support in the Okanagan are rebuilding strength, balance, and confidence after long breaks from activity. The good news is that you don't need complicated workouts to feel better in your body again. A few simple, functional movements can make everyday life easier and safer.
Here are five beginner friendly exercises that help you move with more ease:
1⃣ Sit to Stands A safe, chair supported way to strengthen your legs for daily tasks like getting up from the couch or bed.
2⃣ Wall Push Ups A gentle upper body exercise that builds strength in the chest, shoulders, and arms - no floor required.
3⃣ Bird Dogs A slow, controlled movement that supports core stability and reduces back stiffness.
4⃣ Farmer's Carry Carrying light weights (or water jugs) helps improve grip strength, posture, and balance - all key for fall prevention.
5⃣ Step Ups A simple stair based exercise that strengthens each leg individually and supports safe stair climbing.
🌿 Start with just 2 sets of each movement, 3 days a week. Small, steady steps lead to big improvements in mobility, energy, and confidence.
The goal isn't to get back to who you were 20 years ago - it's to build a stronger, steadier version of yourself today. And that's a goal worth showing up for.
