Here a post I should have made years ago…
When it comes to equine athletes, we often focus on conditioning, nutrition, and training programs—but one of the most overlooked foundations of performance and overall well-being is consistent dental care.
A horse’s mouth plays a critical role in everything they do. From how they chew and digest their feed, to how they respond to the bit under saddle, dental health directly impacts comfort, behavior, and performance.
🦷 Why equine dentistry matters:
Horses’ teeth ERUPT they do not grow (which is why it’s so important they’re done every single year) and their teeth wear continuously throughout their lives. Because of this, uneven wear can lead to sharp points, hooks, waves, and other malocclusion. These issues can cause pain, limit jaw movement, and interfere with proper chewing. Over time, this doesn’t just affect the mouth—it can lead to weight loss, poor feed utilization, and even digestive complications.
🏇 Performance starts with comfort:
For equine athletes, even minor discomfort can translate into major performance issues. Resistance under saddle, head tossing, difficulty accepting contact, or inconsistent behavior may all stem from dental pain. When the mouth is balanced and comfortable, horses are better able to relax into their work, respond to cues, and perform at their full potential.
🌾 Better digestion, better health:
Properly maintained teeth allow horses to break down forage effectively. This is essential for nutrient absorption and gut health. Horses with dental issues may drop feed, chew inefficiently, or develop quidding (spitting out partially chewed hay), all of which reduce the nutritional value they receive from their diet.
We all know how important it is ghat our horses are utilizing every bite in the winter in Canada!
🔄 Consistency is key:
Equine dentistry is not a one-time fix—it’s an ongoing part of responsible horse care. Regular dental exams allow issues to be identified early, before they become more serious or painful. Consistent maintenance helps preserve proper alignment, prevent excessive wear patterns, and support long-term oral health.
❤️ Welfare comes first:
At the end of the day, our horses depend on us to keep them comfortable and healthy. Routine dental care is a simple yet powerful way to improve their quality of life. A pain-free mouth means a happier horse—one that can eat, perform, and live without unnecessary discomfort.
Whether your horse is a high-level competitor or a valued companion, investing in regular, professional dental care is essential. Their performance, health, and happiness all start with a healthy mouth.
If you have questions about your horse’s dental needs or want to schedule an assessment, we’re here to help—because every horse deserves to feel their best from the inside out.

Client tip of the month- December

Now that winter is starting to set in there are a few things you can do to set your horses and Farrier up for safety and success.
If you don't have a covered area, at least set up an area that is clear of snow and ice. Ideally with some protection from the wind. Horse trailers can make great wind breaks. This will ensure that your Farrier can do the best job possible while also helping to keep them and your horses safe.
Thank you
