📚 Another Book I Loved: Attention Span by Gloria Mark

I picked this one up because I was struggling to concentrate for long stretches, especially later in the day, and wanted to better understand what was happening to my attention.

It taught me so much about the nature of distraction, particularly the mental cost of constantly switching between emails, messages, notifications and whatever I was supposed to be doing in the first place!

My biggest takeaway: if I want sustained focus for deep work...and I do...I have to be intentional about limiting distractions. Otherwise, they will happily hijack my attention all day.

A fascinating and very timely read for anyone who feels constantly busy but still struggles to finish the work that matters most.

⏰ The clock is ticking on Q3!

September is almost over, which means we’re heading into the final quarter of 2026.

If you’ve been telling yourself “I still have lots of time to get caught up…” — well, there’s still time. But there’s a lot less of it than there was in May!

Now is a great time to check in on your business finances:

✔️ Is your bookkeeping up to date?
✔️ Are your bank and credit card accounts reconciled?
✔️ Are your HST filings on track?
✔️ Do you know how your business is actually doing so far this year?
✔️ Are there receipts or expenses still waiting to be dealt with?

Getting things organized now means fewer surprises at year-end — and a much easier start to tax season.

And if your books are a few months (or maybe more than a few months 👀) behind, don’t panic. There’s still time to catch up.

We can help.

📉 Attn: Ontario small businesses!

Recently Ontario’s small business corporate income tax rate dropped from 3.2% to 2.2%.

For incorporated businesses that qualify for the Ontario small business deduction, that means keeping a little more of what you earn in the business.

💰 What could that mean in dollars?

At $100,000 of qualifying business income, the 1% reduction works out to about $1,000 less in Ontario corporate tax.

At $500,000 of qualifying income, that could mean up to $5,000 in annual savings.

For businesses with a tax year that includes July 1, 2026, the reduced rate is prorated based on the number of days before and after the change.

It may only look like one percentage point, but for a small business, every bit counts. 🌱

📣 **Small Business Tax Update: The Productivity Mega Deduction**

If your business is planning to invest in new equipment or technology, there’s a proposed tax change worth knowing about.

The federal government has introduced the **Productivity Mega Deduction**, which would allow businesses to **immediately deduct 100% of the cost of many eligible capital purchases** in the year they become available for use — rather than claiming the deduction gradually through Capital Cost Allowance (CCA).

💻 Think computers and technology
🛠️ Equipment and machinery
📡 Certain network and communications equipment
🚜 Many other types of depreciable business assets, including some Canadian made vehicles

The proposed rules would generally apply to eligible property acquired **on or after September 15, 2026**.

Why does this matter?

Normally, when your business buys a capital asset, you can't necessarily deduct the entire cost from your income in the first year. Instead, the deduction is spread over time through CCA.

Under the proposed new rules, many qualifying purchases could be fully deductible right away, potentially reducing taxable business income in the year you make the investment.

**A couple of important notes:** Not every asset qualifies, there are specific exclusions and restrictions, and these measures are currently proposed legislation.

If you're considering a significant business purchase, this is a good reminder that when you buy an asset can matter just as much as what you buy.

📊 Tax season shouldn't be the first time you look at your financials.

Your numbers have something to tell you all year long.

They can tell you:
✔️ Whether you're actually making a profit.
✔️ If your pricing needs adjusting.
✔️ Where your cash is going.
✔️ Whether it's time to hire, invest, or cut back.

When your bookkeeping is up to date, tax season becomes the last step—not the first time you're finding out how your business is doing.

I help business owners stay on top of their books year-round, so they can make confident decisions instead of last-minute guesses.

📚 I’m currently reading How to Be a Rich Old Lady by Amanda Holden, and I’m really enjoying it.

If you’re anything like me, maybe you got a later start on saving for retirement than you would have liked. That can make investing feel overwhelming—as though everyone else knows some secret that you somehow missed.

The truth is, most of us were never taught this stuff. We learned how to write essays and solve algebra problems in school, but very few of us learned how to invest, plan for retirement, or make our money work for us.

That’s what I like about this book. Yes, it’s written with an American audience in mind, so some of the accounts and tax examples are different from what we have here in Canada. But the principles are the same.

It reminds you that investing isn’t reserved for financial experts. It’s simply another skill that can be learned—one step at a time. The more you understand, the less intimidating it becomes.

If you’re Canadian, you’ll need to translate a few of the U.S.-specific details to RRSPs, TFSAs, and our own tax rules, but don’t let that stop you. The mindset and lessons are just as valuable.

If you’ve been putting off learning about investing because it feels too complicated, this might be a great place to start. 💚📖

Have you read a book that changed the way you think about money? I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Are you sure you aren't losing these?

How many receipts are currently sitting in your vehicle?

Or your wallet?

Or stuffed into a random drawer?

You're definitely not the only one.

The problem isn't that they're crumpled—it's that when receipts pile up, they're much easier to lose, forget, or overlook. By year-end, that can mean missed business expenses, extra stress, and hours spent trying to piece everything together.

The good news? You don't need a complicated filing system.

One of my favourite parts of working with clients is helping them replace the "receipt pile" with a simple system they can actually keep up with.

Bookkeeping doesn't have to feel overwhelming—it just needs the right process. If you're not sure where to start, we would be happy to help you build a system that's organized, practical, and works for your business.

📊 Feeling behind on your bookkeeping?

You're not alone.

Many small business owners start out doing everything themselves—and for a while, that works. But as your business grows, it gets harder to keep up with invoices, receipts, HST, payroll, and month-end reporting while also serving customers and running the business.

If you're wondering:
• Am I making money?
• Why is there never as much cash in the bank as I expected?
• Am I setting enough aside for taxes?
• Am I behind on my bookkeeping?

Let's talk.

At Limestone Ledgers, we help business owners get organized, understand their numbers, and feel more confident about the financial side of their business.

No judgment. No accounting jargon. Just practical support and clear information so you can focus on running your business.
