Have you heard about the new bubble curtain technology at the Alexander site? 🫧

Installed 60 feet below the surface, this system creates a gentle wall of air bubbles that keeps harmful plankton blooms and ocean irritants away from the salmon pens. Early regional testing shows it blocks up to 80% to 90% of plankton, helping keep fish healthy and stress-free.

This is all about being proactive, embracing new ideas, and ensuring our community stays at the forefront of sustainable marine operations.

Following the success at Alexander, our operations team is currently in the early planning and deployment phases to bring this same protective technology to our Sheep Pass site.

Big news for the Central Coast! 🐟❄️ Klemtu is officially home to the only ice facility between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy!

This state-of-the-art flake ice unit and sub-zero storage container will support our local food fishers during sockeye season, empower commercial harvesters, and supply passing boats short on ice. Plus, it strengthens local food distribution—helping bring thousands of pounds of fresh fish back to local dinner tables.

We want to extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to everyone who brought this vision to life; Indigenous Fishers First, the Central Coast Commercial Fishing Association (CCCFA), and Celt Industries (especially Michael) for manufacturing, delivering, and installing this game-changing equipment. We also want to recognize Ken Cripps for helping lead our strategic fisheries vision, to Roxanne and Tiffany for grounding this project with a beautiful traditional blessing in June, to Alex and Justin from Mowi for their hands-on coordination, Jeff for operating the telehandler, our dedicated local setup crew, and local harvesters like Basil who continue to keep our community fed.

Together, you’ve helped build a stronger future for Klemtu’s fisheries! 🧊

COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Kitasoo Xai'xais Development Corporation is currently seeking applicants for the following casual positions:

1. Freight Day Helper (Rainier Barge)
Rate: $25.00/hour
Duties include:
• Assist with unloading, moving, and organizing freight deliveries.
• May be required to lift boxes, food supplies, or equipment weighing approximately 20–50 lbs.
• Work is scheduled on freight days as needed.

2. Casual Labourer
Rate: $25.00/hour
Duties include:
• Assist with lifting, moving, and disposing of materials and unwanted items from our shop.
• Move kitchen equipment, storage items, and other materials as required.
• Perform general labour duties as assigned.
• May be required to lift boxes, supplies, and equipment weighing approximately 20–50 lbs.

These are casual, on-call positions based on operational needs.

We are proud to highlight Carey Reid, Klemtu's dedicated Hatchery Manager who works year-round to protect and enhance our wild salmon stocks. From tracking water health to hiking fry out to the river in aerated backpacks, Carey’s passion keeps our community's enhancement program thriving.

Why is our salmon enhancement program seeing such great numbers?

A mix of dedicated local care and smart technology. Carey and his team have been running precision weight and oxygen sampling to keep the fry in peak health. At the same time, new specialized feeding plans and automated equipment provided by Mowi have streamlined operations.

The result has been stronger fish, higher survival rates, and a historic 100% clean health report for this year's coho stock.
