Economist Brendon Ohmundson presented valuable information regarding Canada’s current economic landscape, immigration trends, and the housing market. His analysis emphasized how these factors are influencing small to larger businesses, providing attendees with important takeaways for navigating the challenges ahead.

March 21st marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Racial discrimination negatively affects millions of people around the globe. Slavery and colonialism continue to have a destructive impact on lives and limit opportunities, depriving them of their fundamental human rights and freedoms.

In Canada, federal, provincial and territorial laws protect human rights. These human rights laws are based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, written in 1948 by lawyer and scholar John Humphrey. He played a significant role in creating the Declaration. It includes 30 articles that outline everyone's universal human rights. The first two articles emphasize equality and freedom from discrimination, which are the foundation of the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Do you know that systematic discrimination (or unintentional discrimination) can be embedded in the company’s policies and procedures? What steps is your organization taking to eliminate systematic discrimination in the workplace?

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASING IN 2024

In the year 1999, I landed my first job in retail where I was paid the minimum wage. Believe it or not, the minimum wage in BC back then was only $7.75 per hour. It took a few years for the minimum wage to increase to $8.00 per hour.

Fast forward to the year 2024, when many Canadians are facing financial difficulties; the BC government has announced that as of June 1, 2024, they will be increasing the minimum wage from $16.75 to $17.40. Here is a list of other provinces in Canada that will also be raising their minimum wage in 2024:

Starting April 1, 2024, the minimum wage in Yukon will be raised to $17.59 per hour. Similarly, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador will also increase their minimum wage to $15.20, $15.30, and $15.60 per hour respectively, starting from the same date. Saskatchewan will raise its minimum wage to $15.00 per hour from October 1, 2024. Finally, Prince Edward Island will have two increases - one on April 1, 2024, to $15.40 per hour and the other on October 1, 2024, to $16.00 per hour.

SHOULD YOU LISTEN TO CRITICISM? HOW TO INTERPRET CRITICISM?
Advice from

1) Criticism should be ignored.
2) Listen to your gut feeling, not your amygdala.
3) Never take advice from someone you would not trade places with.
4) Don't take direction from someone who has not been where you are going.
5) The percentage of the time a critic might be correct is 1 out of 100.
6) Seek advice from people you WOULD trade places with.
