Top Takeaways From Our HR Trends Panel

#3 – People Still Matter Most
There is a lot of conversation right now about technology, automation, and AI — and those tools can be valuable. But when it comes to HR, hiring, and team building, people are still at the centre of it all.
Trust your instincts, trust your team, and remember that strong workplace culture is built through relationships, communication, and leadership.

#2 – Referrals, Referrals, Referrals
One of the best hiring tools may already be inside your business: your current team.
Build a culture where employees feel comfortable recommending great people. If you have built a strong team, trust them to help identify others who could be a good fit for your business, your values, and your customers.

#1 – Be Clear on Expectations
Clear expectations matter from day one.
Have honest conversations with new hires about what success looks like in your workplace. Ask questions like: What does “going above and beyond” mean to you? What does “good attendance” look like? What kind of communication helps you do your best work?
Their answers may be different from yours — and the start of the working relationship is the best time to level-set expectations, avoid confusion, and build trust.

Thanks to our panelists and everyone who attended this engaging talk at the Langley Chamber!

Data for Business: March Retail Data Points to Cautious Consumers.

Retail sales were up in March, but the details point to a more cautious consumer picture.

Overall sales rose 0.9%, driven largely by higher spending at gasoline stations as fuel prices increased. At the same time, core retail sales edged down 0.1% and sales volumes fell 0.7%, suggesting consumers spent more in dollar terms, but were not broadly buying more.

For Langley businesses, the data points to a retail environment that remains active, but uneven, with households still cautious and growth concentrated in a few categories.

The Langley Chamber is calling on the Province to stop the planned PST expansion before it takes effect on October 1.

This change would add 7% PST to professional services many businesses rely on every day, including accounting, engineering, architecture, security services, strata management, and more.

For small businesses, this means higher costs at a time when they can least afford it. It also creates a major administrative burden for firms that have never had to register, collect, and remit PST before.

The timeline is also a concern. With final rules expected later this summer and PST registration potentially taking weeks, affected businesses may have very little time to understand their obligations and prepare.

The Langley Chamber has been in contact with the Ministry of Finance and continues to call for this rollout to be stopped.

Visit langleychamber.com/pst for details, transition rules, and ways to share your concerns.
