When asked for comment by Dwayne Gorniak, Alberta Director of Canada’s National Fi****ms Association, regarding the federal government’s announcement today, Dr. Teri Bryant, Chief Fi****ms Officer of Alberta, responded by telephone:
Today’s federal announcement does nothing to change the fact that this entire exercise will be a massive waste of taxpayer dollars with no significant impact on crime. Punishing the innocent can never deter evil-doers. The federal government should terminate this program immediately and use the money for worthwhile initiatives that target real threats to public safety like the smuggling of illegal guns. With a massive budget deficit looming, the federal government should be carefully re-examining the efficacy of every precious taxpayer dollar spent, not clinging to discredited ideas because of ill-advised campaign promises.
The federal “education” effort thus far has been intended to mislead public opinion via the dissemination of clearly demonstrable falsehoods. The program is not voluntary: as they confirmed today, if you don’t comply, you risk criminal sanctions. It does not only affect “assault-style” fi****ms. Appearances do not make a gun dangerous, and many of the guns affected are not even modern in appearance, being single shot, double-barreled, bolt action or of First World War or earlier vintage. The ominous statement that these confiscations are just the beginning should set off alarms everywhere. And those who will be affected are no closer to understanding what is going on than they were before the federal propaganda plan began.
In Alberta we have a long tradition of using fi****ms safely and responsibly for a wide variety of economic and cultural purposes including hunting, trapping, target shooting, collecting and the control of nuisance animals and predators, particularly on our farms and ranches. Unlike the federal government, we value the property rights of our citizens. We will oppose this misguided confiscation program by all means possible and continue to focus on public safety.
