Huge thank you to the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association and the YDRS Committee for giving me the opportunity to speak at your symposium last week!
This was my third year attending and second year speaking. Last year I went as an individual who didn't have a business to back them up. Throughout the conference, I was told that I needed to make this my profession and needed to start advocating for myself. I was given the challenge to start my own business by this time next year and have business cards. So I did. Without their belief in me, OhanaRoots Leadership would never exist. It is because of this conference and the people that encouraged me that I was able to finally take that first step towards my dream.
If you haven't heard of the YDRS Symposium here is a brief description.
People from all over Alberta who work in recreation with children and youth gather together at a camp. We spend the next few days learning about teambuilding, networking, youth development, creating inclusive program and so much more. We share ideas with peers in the same field and learn from each other's experiences. We also get a chance to be kids again and experience the importance of play in our lives. From camp songs around the fire to family style meals in the dining hall, YDRS is the joyful reminder of why we chose this profession.
