Ever wonder what happens when no one volunteers for the fire department?

NOTHING.

No fires get put out.
No vehicle extrications happen at car accidents.
No ice or water rescues get completed.
No one gets out of bed at 2 AM to help protect the community during major flooding events.
Volunteer fire departments only work because ordinary people choose to step forward and serve their communities.

The deadline is fast approaching for Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue to accept up to 5 new recruits. Applications close on May 22, 2026.

If you already picked up an application and haven’t handed it in yet — now is the time.
Haven’t picked one up? We’ve got you covered. Applications are available at the fire hall or the Town Hall.

Think you can’t do it because you’re afraid of heights, dark places, or confined spaces? Don’t let that stop you. We work around your strengths — not your fears.

Like any well-run organization, volunteer fire departments rely on many different skill sets. There is more than one way to serve your community, and your abilities may be exactly what we need.

Step forward.
Serve your community.
Become part of the family at LRFR.

Week 8 of our Junior Firefighter Program brought the heat—then showed our recruits how to put it out the right way.
This week’s training focused on foam applications, an essential skill in modern firefighting. Foam isn’t just about putting water on a fire—it’s about using the right agent to smother flames, suppress vapours, and prevent re-ignition, especially in fuel-related incidents.
Our junior members got hands-on experience learning:
The basics of how foam works
Different types of foam and where they are used
Proper application techniques for maximum effectiveness
Safety considerations when operating around foam environments
Under the guidance of our experienced firefighters, each participant had the opportunity to see firsthand how foam can quickly take control of a situation that water alone can’t handle.
Programs like this are all about building knowledge, confidence, and teamwork. Every week, these future firefighters continue to step up, learn new skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for the job.
The future of the fire service is looking strong
