We were thrilled to host a day of this years Forests Worth Knowing - Atlantic Teachers' Tour!

We had a day full of stops showcasing some of the passionate people in our sector! Starting with a site where Kevin Eisnor, from Eisnors Forestry Ltd. gave an overview of the harvesting job he was doing and the decisions he was making as an operator and business owner. We then went down the road to D. Bedford Forestry Services Inc. pre-commercial thinning site where his students taught us everything they had learned on the job.

Of course, you can’t showcase forestry on the south shore without visiting a Christmas Tree lot, so we went to Tom Ernst’s woodlot where we talked about the business of Christmas Trees as well as popped into a thinning being done on his land by Back Country Farm & Forestry where the teachers were able to get into the harvester with Spencer Simpson, the operator.

After a day full of learning about forestry operations in the woods, we brought everybody back to our mill to show what happens to the logs after they leave the woods, highlighting products, new projects, and our stellar workforce here in Greenfield, NS.

A huge thank you to all of our partners for making this an amazing forestry learning experience for teachers from across the Maritimes and especially to Canadian Woodlands Forum for all the work they put in annually to make it happen!

Freeman Lumber is working hard to preserve the conservation and social value of Nova Scotia’s Eastern hemlock forests through active forest management.

Our integrated hemlock conservation management strategy is using a combination of pesticide treatment (spraying and inoculations) and selection harvesting to combat the growing Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) infestation. This invasive species is decimating our treasured hemlock trees and will result in devastating mortality if left unchecked.

The healthiest trees have been marked for treatment, following best management practices for hemlock conservation. Declining trees are being harvested to control the pest infestation and improve overall forest health and productivity. The harvested areas will be regenerated with a mixture of long-lived Acadian Forest species including white pine, red spruce, yellow birch and red oak.

The goal is to create a diverse, multi-age forest that is more resilient to climate change and natural disturbances (such as wildfire, wind, and other pests) to ensure the long-term sustainability of forests in our communities.
Pictured is a treatment in a declining stand on Ponhook Lake in Greenfield that was partially harvested this past winter and spring with the best hemlock to be treated by the end of this summer.

It all starts Friday night with cigar box style folk music featuring Sam Wentzell and an open cash cup competition. Expect great food and hospitality onsite.
Saturday is a full day of Men’s Open, Women’s, Youth and teams competition.

Last month we hosted a Woodlot Owner Appreciation Day!

We were thrilled to be able to connect with landowners in our own backyard and show them what happens once we have completed a harvest on their land.

80% of the wood sourced in Nova Scotia is from our private landowners, so it was extra important for us to show our appreciation for these stewards of the land, because for us, it all starts with them!
