A new national AI strategy has caught the attention and praise of several members of the postsecondary sector. The strategy aims to address the country’s slow adoption of AI at scale while finding a way to build trust, expand opportunities, and reinforce control of the country’s sovereignty. While the implications of the strategy will affect several sectors in Canada, higher ed will have a particularly crucial role to play in its enactment: Training, research, student work placements, and more will all be essential to the process. The strategy will also draw on Canada’s national AI institutes and the international agreements struck over the last year on the fronts of AI research and development.
