Trust. Compassion. Stability. Hope.
These are the four basic needs that employees need from their leaders. They are important in the best of times. They are essential during a pandemic.

"Amid the chaos and uncertainty of a global pandemic and a bear market, when everyone is looking to you for answers you can't give right now, know one thing for sure: You don't have to have all the answers. But you do need to know how to meet your followers' four basic needs every time you plan, communicate and act.

Focusing on your employees' emotional needs will help get them through the tough weeks ahead. But it will also help you secure your company's future."

With the effects of COVID-19 in full swing, people look to their leaders for four critical things: trust, compassion, stability and hope.

A beautiful blog inviting us all to take some space in the midst of the pandemic. Thanks for Marita Fridjhon for finding the words to express what so many need right now.

Yes, the future will be changed because of all of this. We need to down shift from reactivity, sit in the pause and be present to this moment and what we need right now. Take the space that you need - it's vital.

"But before we go to create from, we need to sit with our reactivity. So, in this article, I’m making the case for taking space. Let’s give ourselves the permission to sit with this edgy, uncomfortable space for a bit. And for that to be okay."

We are all looking for the next step. But what if your next step is a step back? We are in the midst of a global pandemic and right now, we don’t have the whole picture of what’s possible.

Character based leadership will be the grounding force that we all need right now. We are united in a common moment of time where everyone - including leaders - is vulnerable. Vulnerability is the heart centre of connection. There is no possible way for anyone to have all the answers right now. So, how do we navigate this time? Lean into reading this really excellent article from Ivey Business School, co-authored by the amazing Kimberley Young Milani, for excellent tips.

Many parts of this article stood out for me. However, these comments about trust really caught my attention as trust is the primary currency of whole-hearted relationships.

As Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne recently wrote, “Of all the ties that connect us, the most valuable and most fragile one is trust: that willingness, indeed, to let down our guard, to work with rather than against one another.” As we look to our elected officials, medical professionals, and business leaders to forge a path through this global crisis, trust will play a critical role in the outcome. But that trust, fostered through a sense of interconnectedness, humanity, and justice, will need to be placed not only in our leaders but also our fellow citizens. As Coyne stated: “A reservoir of trust—respect for leaders, belief in experts, faith in each other—can mobilize individual citizens to meet collective challenges.”

Where there is trust, there is speed - this leads to increased capacity for adaptability and productivity. This supports innovation and collaboration. Trust and connectedness will be the path to finding the solutions we need to address these times - i.e. vaccines, re-tooling plants to produce materials we need most, etc.

May we continue to be kind and compassionate and stay focused on the larger WE as we tip toe our way through these days and months.

Singing your heart out for others isn't hard when you are at a celebration like a wedding. But it takes strength of character to do so while in self-isolation to protect yourself from a deadly vi

As a Certified Dare To Lead Facilitator, I have developed leaders around this concept. It is one of the hardest and most challenging parts of the curriculum. However, it is also one of the most freeing when people really rumble with what this means as a leader, colleague, friend, partner or parent.

"Dr Brown says the most compassionate and generous people she’d interviewed in her career were the most boundaried.

She writes: “It turns out that we assume the worst about people’s intentions when they’re not respectful of our boundaries: It’s easy to believe that they are trying to disappoint us on purpose.”

Dr Brown says daring leaders work from the assumption that people are doing the best they can; whereas leaders struggling with ego, armour, and/or lack of skills,do not make that assumption."

Assuming the best in people is a vital skill for leaders

This is an important awareness for leaders to consider and develop.

Try really hard, and then stop, recover, and repeat.
