SCAM ALERT
A few weeks ago, I received an email from a Carver Robertson (email [email protected]) asking me for a quote to translate his PhD dissertation. The email seemed off (spelling mistake, etc.). I quoted him $1,299 and he said he would have his sponsor send me a cheque before starting the job. At this point I had a good idea that it was a scam.
Finally, yesterday I received a rush shipment from FedEx containing this cheque from a Toronto company called Job Connection Group Inc.
It’s exactly what I expected – the cheque is for a way higher amount that the quoted job, and I receive an email from “Carver” shortly after claiming that there was a mistake in the amount, and that I need to cash the cheque and refund the difference to him.
After over a decade in business, I can detect these things from the very first email. However new freelancers may not pick up on the signs.
I’m now trying to figure out whether Job Connection Group Inc. was involved or if “Carver” forged this cheque and is preying on them as well. The FedEx shipment originated from the states, so I’m thinking it may be the latter scenario.
The lesson here is to always trust your gut for business transactions! PLEASE SHARE!
