🐝 Wasps — colonies are at their biggest and crankiest in September
🐭 Mice — a gap the size of a dime is all they need before the cold sets in

Those tiny flies in your kitchen? There are three different ones — and if you guess wrong, nothing you do works.

Fruit fly: stubby, tan, red eyes, hovering over the fruit bowl and the recycling. Fungus gnat: slender and dark, drifts up off the houseplant every time you water. Drain fly: fuzzy, moth-like, sitting perfectly still on the bathroom wall.

Fruit flies came home on the bananas — one female lays up to 500 eggs and, at Halifax summer temperatures, egg to adult is about eight days. Rinse every bottle and can before it hits the recycling bin (that's the most-missed source by far), refrigerate ripe fruit for 10 days, and they're gone in about a week. No spray can required.

Fungus gnats mean the plants are too wet. Drain flies mean there's slime film in a pipe — tape a piece of clear packing tape over the drain overnight, sticky side down, and whichever drain catches flies is your culprit.

August is peak flea month in Nova Scotia.

If you spotted your first flea of the year this week, you didn't do anything wrong. Eggs laid back in May, June and July are all hatching at once, and our 20–25°C humid summer runs the whole egg-to-adult cycle in about two to three weeks. A "sudden" infestation is really 8–12 weeks of quiet build-up.

The two-minute check: run a fine comb through your pet's coat over a sheet of white paper — base of the tail, belly, behind the ears. Live jumping specks are fleas. "Salt and pepper" specks that smear reddish-brown on a damp paper towel are flea dirt. That counts, even if you never see a flea. Find either one, call your vet the same day.

And if you don't have a pet? Something else is feeding them — nine times out of ten it's raccoons or skunks under a deck or shed, a feral cat in a garden bed, or squirrels in a soffit.
