At least 23 million people around the world live on flood-plains contaminated by potentially harmful concentrations of toxic waste from metal-mining activity, according to a study from the University of Lincoln published in Science

Researchers also found the number of people exposed to contamination sourced from long-term discharge of mining waste into rivers is almost 50 times greater than the number directly affected by tailings dam failures.

Much of it from the world's 159,735 abandoned metal mines.

At CATALYST, we work closely with mine owners, operators and investors to greatly reduce these risks by providing always-on displacement monitoring for mines as well as solutions to support safer, responsible, and more sustainable reclamation projects.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is forecasting global capacity to triple by the end of 2027.

Optimal solar site selection will be critical to achieving this level of solar energy ( ) production.

CATALYST solutions are leveraged by professionals globally to assist the owners and operators of solar farms in prioritizing land and buildings perfectly suited for solar installations. Integrating satellite data with non-earth observation data such as electrical grid capacity and socio-economic data, due diligence processes to occur in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Watch CATALYST’s “illuminating” analysis of Las Vegas – the US’ second ranked city for installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity per capita; a staggering 443 megawatts of total solar capacity.

With more than 930 buildings mapped, some of which with more that 105MWH per day capability, Las Vegas is placing some big bets on realizing its solar energy potential.

CATALYST continued monitoring throughout the weekend. Using newly collected imagery we have applied our automated flood detection algorithms to the red zone and surrounding areas.

This analysis highlighted extensive flooding around the town of Kintore, just west of airport.

Comparing two images collected 12 days apart, you can see the extent of the flooding and how it stretches out into the land and impacts the roadways and bridges providing access to the town.

This isn't the first time Kintore has experienced this kind of flooding. CATALYST applied its automated flood detection algorithms to another major storm back in January 2016, where once again the same valley was flooded and key infrastructure, such as bridges, were affected.

What were once-in-50-year floods, have happened twice in just seven years.

For residents, not just in Kintore but across and the rest of the UK, continued changes to our climate means they are likely going to see it happen again. And infrastructure, residential property, and even lives will again be at risk.

For local authorities, organisations, and response teams, being armed with historical analysis to predict future extreme weather outcomes, as well as continued monitoring of critical assets will only become more and more important in this region.

Exciting news!

We're giving a talk at next week.

Alongside Principal Geospatial Architect at Microsoft, Rob Emanuele, we'll discuss deploying Radiometric Terrain Correction (RTC) algorithms at scale to process the complete Sentinel-1 GRD archive using distributed cloud computing architectures for the Planetary Computer.

We're looking forward to it and, if you can't join us on the day, we'll be sharing headlines from our talk right here shortly afterwards.

56 years ago today, the first satellite to be designed and constructed in the UK was successfully launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Ariel 3 orbited the Earth every 95 minutes carrying out experiments to measure terrestrial radio noise from thunderstorms, electron temperatures and oxygen distribution in the atmosphere.

Exceeding expectations, it proved a pivotal next step for the British space programme and paved the way for future successful satellite launches.

Through Mine Shift, we've explored various traditional applications of earth observational data in monitoring the safety, efficacy, and operational standards of mines around the world.

There are, though, growing applications among non-traditional industries. One of which is Coherence data.

To mark , we're pleased to launch our new series - Solar Sites.

As a critical renewable energy source, finding more suitable sites for solar panels is ever more important.

This is something we can do using latest satellite imagery and ML algorithms.

And we want to show you how it can work.

So, every month, we're going to map a part of the world where there's plenty of potential for new solar sites. Starting with Dallas, Texas.

When it comes to places to call home, the Bunny is very fortunate: One of the world's most historic, and culturally important places - Easter Island.

This magnificent destination, though, is suffering various environmental pressures including long term droughts and absence of rainfall.

CATALYST INSIGHTS technology was used to assess these impacts, using multi-temporal satellite images collected over Easter Island.
