Choosing between ISO 45001, COR certification, and WSIB’s Health and Safety Excellence Program should not begin with the certificate. It should begin with your business.

In this New Horizons in Safety 2026 clip, Sobi Ragunathan, VP of Operations, Strategy & Partnerships at 4S Consulting, explains how employers can think about the right safety pathway based on their industry, operating environment, and business goals.

For some organizations, ISO 45001 supports broader national or global operations. For Ontario-based contractors and local businesses, COR certification can provide a structured and recognized pathway. For small and medium-sized employers, WSIB’s Health and Safety Excellence Program may be the most practical first step.

Before choosing a pathway, ask:

Where does your business operate?
What do your clients or project owners require?
Is your safety system documented and audit-ready?
Do you need a structured starting point?
Can you prove your safety efforts are improving outcomes?

Today, we recognize the National Day of Mourning, observed annually on April 28 to honour workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or suffered illness because of their work.

First recognized in Canada in the 1980s, this day serves as both a moment of remembrance and a reminder of our shared responsibility to make workplaces safer.

At 4S, we will be taking a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. to honour those affected by workplace tragedies. We encourage other organizations, teams, and individuals to do the same.

Because every worker deserves to return home safely.

Calling all student researchers!! 📣

If you’re working on research related to occupational health and safety, public health, prevention, policy, workplace wellbeing, regulation, training, implementation, or innovation, this is a great opportunity to share your work in a professional setting.

The Research Gallery at New Horizons in Safety 2026, hosted in partnership with WSIB, will take place on May 7, 2026, at Hilton Suites Markham, and we’re inviting students to present their work as part of the event.

This is more than just a chance to showcase your research. It’s a chance to put your work in front of people across the safety sector, including representatives from WSIB, MLITSD, IWH, and CCOHS, as well as researchers, employers, and leaders from industry, academia, and prevention.

It’s also a valuable networking opportunity, a chance to meet people in the field, make connections beyond the classroom, and engage with organizations and professionals shaping the future of workplace safety.

Whether your project is academic, applied, independent, or part of a larger initiative, the Research Gallery is a chance to gain visibility, build experience, and show the real-world value of your work.

Come share your research, grow your network, and be part of the conversation around what’s shaping safety right now.
