Our friends here at City Centre Church Mississauga are using their awesome new jerseys! Here are some pictures of them having lots of fun!
is underway! With almost 40 kids and 15 leaders / coaches we have had a great couple of days. Pastor Drew starts each day with pray for the campers and leaders. We head into the gym to hang out with the campers and get started. First with an icebreaker game, then warm-up drills then onto team group time. We also have a controlled scrimmage, skills training and the Game Plan speaker, Pastor Greg. It is great to see the campers improving in their skills of the game basketball but even more importantly getting to know and understand the truth of why God created them and challenged to study these truths in the Bible for themselves.
Day one the campers started learning their fundamentals of passing, dribbling and where to look when you are doing both. They also learned the proper stance, how to protect the ball when being defended and many other things. They received a poster as their free gift. As well they learned God created them for relationships.
Day two the campers learned more fundamentals of basketball. The main thing they learned was how to defend an opponent who has the ball. The scrimmages where even better than yesterday. Each camper is getting better at shooting and passing. They received a water bottle as their free gift today. As well they learned God created them for justice.
Day three the campers learned all about shooting! They learned how to hold the ball to shoot a proper jump shot and they learned it by laying on their back. They also learned how to do a complete lay-up to the basket. And when the 4 teams had a shoot out competition the grade 4 & 5 teams won! I guess the older campers have to step up to be able to win tomorrow! They also received their jerseys today. We took team photos (which they will receive on Friday) and a camp photo where Pastor Andrew stood on a 9 foot ladder to get everyone in the photo. As well they learned that God created them for joy.
Day four the campers learned about defense. Most people don't like to learn about defending the ball because it isn't as flashy as shooting the ball and scoring the basket. But it is very important to know how to defend the person you are guarding so they score on you. The campers learned how to follow their opponent and not the ball, they learned how stick to their opponent no matter what they do. We even played a game (Sharks & Minnows) to help them to understand defense where the leaders / coaches were trying to get the ball away from the campers and the campers were trying to get to the other side of the gym. They also got some refresher courses on dribbling, passing and shooting. They received a water bottle with our Sport Camp logo on it as their free gift. And they learned that God created them for wisdom. Tomorrow is our final day of camp.
Day five the campers got to play in front of their parents! But before their parents arrived they have a refresher course in all their learned this week. Shooting, dribbling, defense, defending the ball, triple threat position (you can dribble, pass or shoot) and passing. The learned that God created them for mission! After all the fun of playing in a whole bunch of games in front of their parents, each camper was given their final free gifts: their very own basketball and a photo of their team and the whole camp.
What a week! A special thank you to all the coaches and leaders for all their hard work and dedication this past week. The final photo is a picture of all our leaders.
