THANK YOU to everyone who showed up to help clean our beaches on Sunday! We had a great turnout, beautiful weather, and collected loads of marine waste - including lots of styrofoam and nylon ropes.

If you have any photos from the cleanup you'd like us to share, please email them to [email protected] with the subject line CLEANUP

The Annual Beach Cleanup is upon us! TOMORROW April 19th, we're gathering all across Mayne to clean up our beloved beaches. The forecast is looking friendly, now all we need is you!

Sunday April 19th 2026, 11am at beaches across Mayne
Bring gloves and join in, then come to the post-cleanup celebration at 4pm at the Ag Hall!

For over two decades the Recycling Society, in partnership with the Mayne Island Conservancy, has led an annual one day clean-up of beaches on Mayne Island. Held in the springtime, this massive volunteer effort, with often over 100 people involved, combs all of our popular beaches, removing the flotsam and jetsam. This fun activity not only leaves our beaches pristine for our residents and visitors, but removes hazardous wastes from the marine environment.

Typically over a ton of debris is removed and brought to the depot, where it is sorted and weighed, and then trucked off island for disposal. Cleaner plastic, Styrofoam, tires, and other material is taken to the Ocean Legacy Foundation in Richmond for a new lease on life! Last year, we were able to divert 72% of collected material to their program for upcycling.

A little post-Valentines sweetness - our neighbours on the mainland are getting new pink bins for soft plastic recycling! 🩷 Recycle BC is heading this initiative, beginning with collection in apartments & condos. And yes, it includes crinkly plastic!

We love to see recycling made more accessible, and we know the power of sorting! 💪
