Diving into Canada's Asbestos History 🇨🇦🏭

Canada's past is closely linked with its vast natural resources, and asbestos played a significant role. In the late 19th century, asbestos mining kicked off, and the town of Asbestos in Quebec was aptly named after this mineral. 🏞️

During the 20th century, Canada became a global asbestos giant, boasting massive mines in Quebec and exporting to over 50 countries. The town of Asbestos prospered, and asbestos was a versatile material widely used in construction, automotive, and other industries. But, the hidden health hazards emerged over time, leading to tighter regulations and the industry's decline. 📉

By the early 2000s, Canada's asbestos production halted completely, shifting focus to asbestos abatement and remediation to tackle the environmental and health concerns associated with this once-prized mineral. 🛠️🌱

My life has been one of aviation in many forms and disciplines. I have been flying aircraft for over 40 years. I was an Airline Captain flying a B-767 and have owned and operated a Commercial Balloon Operation for 30 years. I have over 22,000 hours total time in various aircraft and over 3000 hours in Hot Air and Gas Balloons.
I have flown at the Nationals at least 15 times and have been Canadian Champion three in the past. I was a Pacific Champion and was runner-up at the North Americans. I have flown balloons in the Far East, Europe and the Middle East. I have competed in Worlds for Canada 5 times and 3 North American Championships. I am a member of the FAI (CIA) Jury Board and have been a Director of the Canadian Nationals in the past. I was the Balloonmeister for the Vernon Winter Carnival Balloon Fiesta for the past 20years. I am currently the President of the Canadian Balloon Association.
Most fun in ballooning is an all expense paid trip to Jordan as the guest of the Government with 35 other balloon pilots to fly and stay in Wadi Rum Jordan. To honour King Hussein for his 65 Birthday.

Thanks to this Balloon's sponsor: Axiom Asbestos Corp.
David is representing Crestwood and Southview Schools!

Yes, even trailers contain asbestos. In trailers you will most likely find asbestos in the flooring. This can be in ATCO trailers (as shown) and also in camper trailers. If you are renovating a camper trailer be sure to get the flooring tested!
