From Hive to Market: AgPro Students Dive Into the World of Beekeeping & Honey!
What happens when agriculture, technology, science, and entrepreneurship come together? Hands-on learning at its sweetest!
We were thrilled to welcome AgPro students from Irvine School (Prairie Rose Public Schools ) to the PrairieRose Honey bee yard for an immersive, cross-curricular learning day led by myself and Director of Agriculture Education Nichole Neubauer .
This experiential trip bridged classroom theory with real industry practice across three core areas:
• Science & Stewardship: Students rolled up their sleeves for hive inspections. They assessed colony health, learned about challenges like Varroa mites, practiced sticky-board monitoring techniques, and helped feed the colonies. They even explored the biochemistry of how bees transform nectar into honey through enzymatic breakdown and evaporation.
• Technology & Innovation: The group was introduced to an upcoming research project using BroodMinder smart sensors. They discovered how modern apiaries use real-time data on hive weight and environmental conditions to drive management decisions.
• Business & Food Processing: Through Stella Sehn’s “From Hive to Market” workshop, students traced raw honey’s journey to a retail shelf. They gained foundational insights into food safety, professional packaging, branding, and value-added marketing.
Experiences like these show students that modern agriculture is about so much more than producing food. It is a dynamic intersection of STEM, environmental stewardship, and entrepreneurship.
