Good evening Saskatchewan!

As we said a few days ago, we've been working on a few new forecasts and features for the winter season. With the impending storm that will bring blizzard-like conditions to Central Saskatchewan and prolonged freezing rain to Southeastern Saskatchewan, we thought this would be a good time to introduce our... Power Outage Forecast!

If you missed our regular detailed forecast for this event, you can find it here: https://instantweatherinc.com/articles/2020/11/6/record-breaking-blizzard-takes-aim-at-saskatchewan-this-weekend-up-to-50cm-of-snow-possible-by-monday

We know it can be hard to decipher the potential impacts from the traditional freezing rain accretion map and it also depends on many other variables. So we've done the hard work here and have created an easy-to-understand categorical forecast for power outages. If you find this type of forecast helpful then please let us know in the comments and also include any feedback you may have. We plan on issuing these with every potentially impactful freezing rain event for Southern Saskatchewan over the winter.

And now onto the actual forecast:

A system bringing blizzard conditions to parts of Central Saskatchewan will also bring the potential for many hours of freezing rain to the southeastern corner of the province. The hardest-hit area appears to be just to the east of Regina including Weyburn, Estevan and Yorkton where up to 6-12mm of freezing rain accretion is possible. The heaviest freezing rain is expected to occur between Sunday early morning and into the evening. This combined with strong wind gusts will likely bring down trees and power lines causing many power outages in the area.

Regina is a little tricky to forecast depending on the track of the system. It initially looked like they would see mainly snow mixed with ice pellets at times with total accumulation between 20-30cm. Now, the latest models have started to put some of the freezing rain into the Regina area during the afternoon on Sunday. It very well could remain just ice pellets but power outages can't be ruled out.

Stay safe everyone!

Nearly 300 pieces of equipment station at about 75 locations across the province are ready to roll. Salt and sand is positioned strategically to limit dead/empty hauling.

The Hotline is updated as road conditions change and drivers are reminded to be aware that driving conditions can change quickly and check the Hotline before travelling. www.saskatchewan.ca/highwayhotline

Slow to 60 when passing snow plows that are pulled over with their blue lights engaged. Snow plows travel slower than normal highway speeds when performing winter maintenance. They will pull over about every 10 km or so, or when they have a safe opportunity.

When plows have their blue lights on, please stay back and wait until the plow pulls over before passing.
