At 22:46 last evening, MFD was dispatched to a confirmed structure fire on Jubilee Road in Millet. A quick knockdown by the first arriving crew contained the fire to the detached garage on the property.

MFD’s firefighters remained on scene until approximately 01:30 this morning, and returned this morning to complete investigation efforts. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Truth be told, we miss the days when motorists slowed down for any flashing lights (4-way flashers (aka HAZARD lights), amber lights, red lights, blue lights - if there’s lights flashing ahead, slow down and move over… It might just save a life).

News Release: County Receives STSS Fire Accreditation

The County of Wetaskiwin is excited to announce the achievement of Superior Tanker Shuttle Service (STSS) accreditation for three locations within the County. Homeowners within five kilometres by road of City of Wetaskiwin Fire Services Station #1, Station #2 or Millet Fire Department may be eligible for the accreditation to be applied to their insurance policies. STSS accreditation is recognized by many insurance companies to offer equivalent protection to municipal hydrant systems, meaning homeowners with the accreditation applied to their property’s policy often qualify for significantly reduced fire insurance premiums.

STSS accreditation is awarded by Canada’s Fire Underwriters Survey, earned by fire departments when they demonstrate their ability to successfully perform water shuttle operations that provide continuous water supply equal to or exceeding the minimum required for municipal hydrant water supplies.

To be recognized for Accredited STSS, fire departments must prove through rigorous testing that the specified requirements can be consistently exceeded. Both fire stations within the City of Wetaskiwin and Town of Millet have exceeded the necessary requirements, proving the ability to transport water from a static water supply and maintain a flow rate of 1,000 L/min for two consecutive hours. Over the course of testing, each fire department used pumpers and tankers to haul water from fire hydrants to a mock fire location, demonstrating the ability to qualify for the accreditation.

“We are pleased with the success of this trial and look forward to expanding the program to other departments” said Reeve Josh Bishop. “Thank you to the exceptional firefighters in Millet and Wetaskiwin for achieving this accreditation.”

Property owners within the recognized areas are encouraged to contact their insurance providers to inquire about the application of STSS accreditation to their insurance policies. 26-140: MFD on scene of a 4 vehicle, non-injury collision on NB QEII, approximately 2 km south of Hwy 616 overpass. Traffic is barely moving past the scene and is backed up past TWN 470 (Correction Line). Holiday travellers should consider detouring at Hwy 13 through Wetaskiwin, and then north on 2A as there will be massive delays on QEII northbound.

As an update - and fair warning - if you’re stuck in traffic on the QEII NB and decide to pull your phone out to grab a picture or a video as you finally drive by the scene, you’ll more than likely be caught, pulled over, and issued a very large ticket and a court summons from the officers on scene.

So do yourself (and us) a favour. Put your phone away. Save yourself the embarrassment of being “that person”

Be advised, QEII northbound is CLOSED at the Millet (Hwy 616) overpass due to a major collision. Expect the closure to last at least 3 hours (current time 12:47). All traffic is being routed past the scene on the Exit 497 off ramp. Expect major delays and avoid the area if possible.

MFD’s Community Relations Team is once again collecting candy to hand out at the firehall on Halloween. If you’d like to donate, drop off will be October 7th or 21st, between 6:45 pm and 8:00 pm at the firehall.

Remember, we only accept pre-packaged candy - while we all love a good candied-apple or popcorn ball, we can’t accept anything homemade!
