26-073 last evening was a mutual aid request to our partners at Wetaskiwin Fire Department, at the “Memorial Arts Centre” Fire.

7 MFD members battled alongside WFD for several hours, with Pump 1 and Charlie 1 on scene. This proved to be a very stubborn fire with ever-changing fire conditions.

Millet Fire Department gathered last night to commemorate Chief Moen’s retirement, 9 years to the day since he took the role, and to signify the department’s leadership transition with a changing of epaulettes for several members.

Chief Steve Moen first pinned 5 stripes onto incoming Chief Trevor Palmer, who then pinned 4 stripes onto incoming Deputy Chief Mark Bruun.

Chief Palmer and DC Bruun’s first order of business was to promote Sr FF Dale Hofstra, FF Adam Walters, and FF Todd Vogelesang to Lieutenant, signified by the single gold stripe on their epaulettes. Last, but certainly not least, Ryan McGillivray, Steve Moen and Kyle McNichol were announced as Sr FF’s.

Please join us in thanking Chief Moen - for being a phenomenal leader of our department, for paving the road to our continued growth and development, and for more than 26 years he’s put in (so far) answering the beck and call of the pager. We are confident in the continued success of MFD for years to come, following the footsteps of more than 50 years of great leadership.

Effective immediately, Leduc County is no longer under a fire restriction due to cooler conditions and increased precipitation, returning to normal status as of 9 a.m., June 1, 2026.

Fire permits will be available to residents as long as wind conditions are below 20km/h.

Leduc County thanks the public for its cooperation and compliance with the fire restriction and encourages residents to continue practising responsible burning.

As we celebrate a 30+ year career with MFD, it’s pretty amazing all that David Monahan has seen and done with MFD. Since first joining in 1994, following the footsteps of his dad (the late Brian Monahan), he’s seen thousands of emergency incidents, training events, certifications across years of on the job training - “baptism by fire” if you will!

One of his most memorable calls was a large grass fire, years ago, with Dave driving the old yellow Pump & Chief Kilborn riding on the back of the truck, fighting fire. Dave vividly remembers Al saying, “Dave, I will fight fire with you any day”, and anyone who knew Al will agree that this is high praise. He also remembers his early days at MFD, when riding the tailboard was common while responding to calls (that’s long gone, now!).

Dave joined MFD following his father, the late Brian Monahan, who served a lengthy career at MFD also. A young Dave frequented the firehall long before he joined the ranks, and it’s where he learned to work hard, knowing first responders only meet people on the worst day of their life.

Dave’s best advice for future firefighters, is to take any traing offered, but to remember that on the job training is just as important as book work - as is paying attention to older, experienced firefighters.

Dave credits many people for guidance throughout his career: first & foremost his dad, the late Fire Marshal Brian Monahan. He also mentions Fire Chief (the late) Al Kilborn, Fire (the late) Chief Al Hegge, Fire Chief (Retired) Blair Mohr, current Fire Chief Steve Moen, current DC Trevor Palmer, and Cpt. (Retired) Mike Parsons, as well as so many other amazing firefighters and fire officers through the years. When asked if there was anything he would change, if he could, he said “No mulligans, I learned from everything.” This has always been key to Dave’s fire services career: seeing opportunity to learn and grow, even when things that didn’t go to plan.

When given an ‘open mic’, Dave’s words are: “I am truly honored to be retiring, and putting my efforts into the Millet Veteran Firefighter’s Association with so many of my fellow retired Millet firefighters”.

For more than 30 years, Millet Fire Department’s Fire Marshal David Monahan has answered the beck and call of an often relentless fire pager. What an amazing gift to give to the community where he was raised!

Following closely in the footsteps of his father, the late Brian Monahan, Dave joined MFD in 1995, advancing through ranks. On thousands of occasions, he has responded in all weather conditions, on any day of the year, at any time of the day, to help someone in their time of need. Not many people can emulate that kind of dedication, year over year.

FM Monahan, be proud of a career well spent serving a greater good. Millet and surrounding area is a better place thanks to your contributions through more than 3 decades.

Enjoy all that retirement brings, and thank you for your service above self!
