📢 PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY – Peacekeeper Drone Activity

Community members may notice increased Peacekeeper drone activity in and around Natoaganeg/Eel Ground. The drone may be used for training, search-and-rescue, emergency response, wellness checks, and other community safety operations.

There is no need to be alarmed when the drone is operating. Please keep a safe distance, follow directions from Peacekeepers, and avoid sharing the drone’s location on social media during active operations.

Public Safety Notice: Do Not Shoot At, Damage, Grab, Chase, Jam, or Interfere With a Drone

There is a common misconception that a person “owns” all of the airspace above their property. That is not how aviation law works in Canada.

A property owner does not own or control the navigable airspace above their land. Drones are aircraft, and drone pilots operate under Transport Canada rules, airspace rules, privacy obligations, and public safety requirements.

If you believe a drone is being flown improperly, too close to people, in a restricted area, or in a way that violates your privacy, the proper response is to document it and report it.

The proper response is not to shoot at it.

Shooting at a drone, attempting to bring it down, damaging it, grabbing it, throwing objects at it, interfering with the pilot, or otherwise obstructing the operation can expose a person to serious legal consequences, including possible Criminal Code charges such as:

• careless use of a firearm
• reckless discharge of a firearm
• mischief / property damage
• endangering public safety
• endangering the safety of an aircraft
• seizure of fi****ms
• fi****ms licence consequences
• restitution for damage or replacement costs
• possible jail time depending on the facts

Some of these offences carry extremely serious potential penalties. For example, endangering the safety of an aircraft or airport under the Criminal Code can carry a sentence of up to life imprisonment.

A drone in the air may also be carrying live flight data, video evidence, GPS logs, pilot records, and aircraft registration information. In other words, interfering with a drone is usually not anonymous and can be documented very clearly.

If a drone is operating lawfully, leave it alone.

If a drone is operating unlawfully, report it through the proper channels.

Do not turn a drone complaint into a fi****ms incident.

Over the past week, Mi’kmaq Peacekeeping Inc. Peacekeepers took part in an Advanced Operations Certification and UAV Search & Rescue Techniques course delivered by Orijinative Drones Inc. in partnership with H&K Drones Inc.

One Peacekeeper from each of the eight participating communities attended the training, building advanced RPAS knowledge and practical UAV search and rescue skills that can support real-world emergency response operations.

As part of this broader initiative to strengthen individual community response capabilities, each Peacekeeper also received a DJI Matrice 4T and supporting equipment. This gives each community access to modern aerial technology that can assist with search and rescue, situational awareness, emergency coordination, and public safety operations when every minute matters.

This training represents an important step forward in building local capacity, increasing preparedness, and supporting communities with the tools and skills needed to respond more effectively during emergencies.

Public Notice – Drone Training Exercise Tonight (April 23, 2026)

Residents of Eel Ground First Nation may notice drones operating in the airspace this evening as part of a coordinated training exercise being conducted by the Peacekeepers.

This training is focused on strengthening emergency response capabilities and improving coordinated response efforts within the community and neighbouring communities.

There is no reason to be alarmed. The drone activity is planned, authorized, and part of the exercise.

You may also notice an increased Peacekeeper or security presence in the area. This is also part of the training.

Please do not contact emergency services if you see a drone or notice this activity, unless there is a real emergency unrelated to the training exercise.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as the Peacekeepers continue building safer and stronger emergency response capacity for the communities they serve.
